Me too. Not sharpened at all is very much desirable to poorly sharpened or worse over sharpened. Seems most factory knives come with wonky choils slight recurves and rounded tips. Very frustrating.

I laugh when I here people send a knife back to the factory to be sharpened, they are the last people i want touching my blades.
if I could sharpen as well as you can Sir..id feel that way too, likely. I prefer a decent or good edge from the factory....ill fix what isn't perfect though myself.....over time. only really care about cutting and using sharp...not so much beautiful edge myself.

I'm not an expert, that term is overused and misused. Yes, I do maintain a very nice edge, thank you. I like the mirror finish, very appealing to me - especially because it doesn't take much of my time.... Tormek ; )

I don’t. People that sharpen knives 8-10 hours a day for a living tend to be better at it than internet snobs that do it as a hobby for a couple hours a week.. although the hobbyists would never admit that.
Thats just not true.

They do it faster, with belt sanders most likely for close to minimum wage.

I’m not a hobbiest or a snob. But i have the luxury of being able to take my time sharpening a knife. Getting it the way I like it. I could never make money sharpening knives.

My point was that I’d rather do it myself than have them remove too much.

What does how much they make have to do with how good they are at it? You know anyone that pays people $50 an hour to sharpen knives all day?

Your preference. I prefer my knives come to me with a half decent edge. That doesn’t mean I suck at sharpening, and it doesn’t mean the knife is ruined. I personally think someone assuming they can sharpen a knife better than a knife manufacturer just because they spent several hundred dollars on a sharpening system and watched some YouTube videos is quite ridiculous.

I see what I
No, it’s pretty much everyone’s expectation but yours.

So what are you saying, that you call ahead to knife manufacturers and tell them not to sharpen your knife because you’re “better at it” than them? I’ll bet that goes over well.
I already inquired Benchmade about that... you can spend $400 on a knife but they can't send it to you unsharpened.... : (

Lol I’m sure you have, that’s why I said it.

If I was a betting man, I’d bet you’d be sending it back to Benchmade to fix the edge after you try to put an edge on it.

The arrogance of thinking that just because you think you can sharpen better than Benchmade that all Benchmade knives should be sent to customers unsharpened… un-freaking-believeable. Please tell me you’re joking.

There are different skill levels for sharpening knives. People on the low end want a sharp knife from the factory because it's better than what they can yield. I think this is the group paratrooper is speaking for. I mean no disrespect - sharpening knives well is a skill one must obtain through dedication, the right tools, ect.

I incorrectly lumped all the people who sharpen knives to have the high skill level many users on this forum have in attaining a perfect edge. Paratrooper has a valid point to oppose one of my previous posts here.

You’re starting to get it. 99.9% of people that buy knives don’t bother with sharpening equipment. They want a knife that cuts out of the box and when the edge goes dull, they’ll send it back in, maybe once every year or two.

So I’m the only one who brings my hot plate into Applebee’s?
Apparently not. Sounds like there are people here that would hire contractors to build a house and then tell the carpenters how to swing a hammer because they bought $800 worth in hammers and watched some YouTube videos.

Yes, I can and do sharpen my knives much better than any manufacturer. How is this so difficult for you to believe?

You obviously failed to comprehend the statements in my posts here.

Give someone a knife, and they'll probably cut themselves with it.
Teach them to sharpen that knife: they simply get cut with a sharper knife!
