I just had "the talk"...

(...) She sat down next to me and very sincerely asked, "So tell me, what do you like about that one?" (...)

She was a good sport about it though and paid attention the whole time. (...)

Even if she doesn't give a flying fiddler's fling about your knives, it was nice of her to take enough interest in you to ask about your hobby. That's gotta count for something!

... and yeah, you're probably going to get jammed with a shopping expedition or get stuck 'helping' with some kind of shower in the near future... :thumbdn: :D

My GF tries to pretend to understand the motivations behind collecting knives but she gives up in about 20 seconds and goes back to reading her Frankie magazine. And to think about the money I've spent buying her designer handbags over the years...

Well at least she's not telling me she thinks it's creepy anymore. Progress is progress right?

I think he was "this" close to getting some that night but blew it by going too far

Next time and there will be one as others have said she is a keeper for just showing genuine interest, but try this. Tell her you like the lines of the handle or blade and how it flows tie it into some part of the female anatomy like hips, or other curves and whamo she gets its, is also kinda flattered if you relate it to perhaps her anatomy. You kill several birds with one stone, insuring her continued interest, flattering her and possibly getting some. Sounds cheesy but done correctly it works and works well.

This.

My wife just walks by and says, "What ya looking at" then she see's what I am looking at and shakes her head.
Not saying there aren't women out there that are interested in knives, I just haven't met one.

I got so excited she was interested that I way... way.... waaayyy jumped the gun and actually explained the differences and various advantages/disadvantages of convex, full flat and scandi grinds. I pulled out physical examples of my knives to show her. I talked about g*d damn stainless vs. carbon steel and even went so far as to cite specifics of O1 vs. VG-10 vs. 1095 and so on. I even told her about handle ergonomics, the rockwell scale and tang construction followed by a demonstration of some common knife grips like the chest lever...

SUCCESS!!!!

Next time she sees you looking at knives she'll just ignore you or bring you a tissue to wipe the drool from your chin. No more silly questions from her! She had to learn not to ask at some point, do we ever ask what they like about some handbag that they just had to buy for a few hundred bucks?

Buy her something she'll enjoy and simplify the specs for her. She'll never get in like you, but she'll understand more. The fact she listened in earnest, despite probably being disinterested suggests she's "a keeper". Good luck!

A lot of you guys remind of friends I had, when I was a lot younger, who liked nothing more than opening the hoods of their cars and talking passionately, among themselves, about the details of their carburetors or whatever. I was always bored to death by these conversations. I liked cars for the way they looked and for what you could do with them.[ ie;pick up some chicks if you were luckly]
I still feel that way [minus the picking up chicks part, as my wife is strangely intolerant of that kind of thing] I also feel that way about knifes; the way they look [ie the "cool handle" as described above] is always most important to me. I saw a TV program last night about the renegade Renaissance painter, Carravagio, whose paintings were ment to grab you by the throat, without a thought for the 'mechanics' of the painting.
I thought to myself at the time; "that's how I"m attracted to knives , they either grab me or they don't and steel composition, angle of grind etc, etc have nothing to do with my inital positive or negative reaction."

When their eyes start to glaze over you gotta back off! :D I think you have a keeper there! My wife always asks to see what arrived in the mail but ya just know she doesn't really care!

I just did that yesterday to some one. I think they managed to get out maybe a "yeah thats cool".
BTW whats a chest lever?

Wow, so many good comments! Thanks for the replies everyone, from the funny to the serious.

I'm tempted to show her this thread now but I'm afraid she would get to many "good" ideas and justify a new hand bag or take me shoe shopping like you guys said... Ha ha. I hate to admit it but I probably deserve it.

Seeing the "keeper" remarks would definitely put a smile on her face.

Thanks for all the advice guys and I'll keep trying. She just looks so damn cute hiking down the trail with a Mora clipped to her belt, I want to see it every day! Girls and knives are my weaknesses...

Here is the only picture I could find online demonstrating the chest lever grip. Instead of using your hands and arms to move the knife and remove wood, use your back muscles. It's very powerful, controlled and safe.

If you search "chest lever grip" on YouTube you will get a better idea on what I'm talking about. Easier to show someone than write about it.

Hope this helps though!
