I just received a small sebbie.... I don't get it.

It's funny how things change! When I first got really into knives I had a guy offer me a matching dogpaw (small and large) set for a pistol. Then a matching micarta set. I was NOT interested. I didn't think there was anything special about them at all. So I went through my Benchmade and spyderco and everything else phase. I fought it for a long time wondering who would ever pay $400 for that boring knife. Now I own 6 and don't miss my benchmades a bit (except maybe for the nice collectible 635's I had).
I only own two Spydercos now, but I still love spyderco (Sage II and GB). The PM 2, Leafstorm and Southard are really the only others that interest me.
I felt the same about the Umnumzaan. I hated it when I first held one. I thought it was too big and liked the sebbie more. Now the Umnums are almost always in my pocket. I use them too! It took me a while to use a pretty $400 knife, but now they are broken in, I can't imagine how it gets too much better.

Giving an update after a few weeks. I love it. I find I carry it more than my PM2 now. It really started without me noticing, but now its always in my pocket. Definitely starting to get it now. The lockup and feeling of it is like no other.

I am having an issue sharpening it though. Compared to my PM2, I cannot get it as sharp. It will shave hair, but not easily like the Spyderco. I will admit I have a cheap Lansky ceramic rod sharpener (http://lansky.com/index.php/products/4-rod-turn-box/). I purchased it when I was relatively new to knives. If I upgrade to a Sharpmaker, will I see better results? I have a strop and always use it after the Lansky, but I still cant seem to get it hair whittling sharp. Any tips?

CRK puts a fat, convex edge on their folders, so it won't sharpen properly on angle rod sharpen like the Sharpmaker or what you have.

You will need to buy a real sharpener and completely re-profile it before it will ever cut or sharpen properly.

How come CRK recommends the sharp maker of it doesn't work? What do you recommend?

I actually have no idea why they recommend the Sharpmaker. There is too much steel behind the edge for it to ever hit the stones. It's silly.

You need a Wicked Edge or Edge Pro to completely bring it down to a normal angle before you will be able to effectively touch it up on a Sharpmaker or what you own.

Daunting, I know.

How? Ha. It's like forgetting your child in their car seat on top of the car?! :)

Your analogy might work better if I had 3 dozen children, like I do Sebenzas. It actually wasn't hard to do, I pushed it behind the big box of CRK's in my safe, then went back overseas and forget all about it. I pulled the big box all the way out on night, instead of just pulling it out far enough to take knives from it, and there it was. Sitting in it's little box, hiding from all the commotion.

Cant really say anything on this, I've owned 3 sebenzas but have only handled a para 2 once. Actually, I've handled more Annual sebenzas than para 2s. Come to think of it, I've probably handled more crks than spydercos in general

Took me a few years to decide I'd pay the kind of $$ it does to own a Seb. I ended up buying a used Lg Pheasant Tail SEB. Have had it for years now and never considered selling it.

However, I also use a PM2, which is a great EDC blade. While I use it more than my SEB, never have I felt my SEB was not worth the money...I also own 3 of their fixed blade knives. All are of the highest quality. Chris Reeve knows how to build a quality knife. Period.

I have no problem getting mine screaming sharp freehand, or on a Sharpmaker. Sharpmaker works great for me, and I can take a dull blade to hair shaving sharp in a few minutes.

The Sharpmaker works great for me too. My large sebe is the sharpest knife I own and it touches up really nice on the sharpmaker.

Per this comment: "CRK puts a fat, convex edge on their folders, so it won't sharpen properly on angle rod sharpen like the Sharpmaker or what you have. You will need to buy a real sharpener and completely re-profile it before it will ever cut or sharpen properly."

I only have one sebenza, but it was almost perfect for the 30 degree rods on the Sharpmaker. Only the tip was a little fatter than 30 degrees. So the sharpmaker is enough of a "real sharpener".

In no way was my edge "fat convex". CRK recommends the Sharpmaker because it works for their knives. Also the sebeeza "cuts and sharpens properly" right out of the box. There is no need to reprofile the edge.

My observation is that some people have an appreciation for quality: fit, finish, ergo's, exotic materials, and aesthetics. Some do not. They see no reason to spend good money on Porsches, Rolexes, CRK or Hinderers, etc., etc.

I've met so many of each group over the years that I have wondered if our brains are wired differently.

For me, I have always got my money's worth out of fine, high-quality items, whether they be watches, knives, clothes, or cars. I get pure pleasure out of seeing, using, and fondling them. I've been told I'm throwing my money away. Fine, it's my money. And there is room in the USA for both kinds of people. I don't' put down people who proudly wear a Timex, use a certain knife, or drive a beater. I would hope they don't question we folks who prize quality at its highest level.

Sebenzas are glorious objects that, in my mind, equal works of art. Art with functionality. As others have said, if it doesn't do it for you, stick with what does. Life is too short to fit into someone else's shoes.
I agree totally. I'm from the other side of the isle; wear a Casio, drive a beater or 4, and carry a $6 Chinese knife. I totally get those that prize the best. I suspect if the truth be known, all us bottom feeders get it; it's just a matter of degree. We don't get it enough to commit that kind of money for something that often becomes nothing more than man jewelry.

Having said that, here I am perusing this and other similar threads and viewing some amazing photography of some amazing knives. I'll almost never say never but likely won't post pictures. My camera is a beater too.

Well, my Sebenza is a 2006, not sure if that matters, but the edge made no contact with the Sharpmaker, at all. I had to reprofile it before it would touch up on the Sharpmaker, and it sounded like he was having the same problem, I did.

When I got mine, years ago, I looked up why it didn't work on the SM, and read about how they use a convex edge that might not be thin enough to touch up on the SM. It was not hard to fix, but I did have to upgrade to a more complex sharpener and re-profile the edge to a thinner angle.

My apologies for assuming they were all like that. I figured it just had to do with the convex edge bevel.

Well they are sharpened by humans so there will always be variety. :). Some people wish the steel was harder, but if it was it'd take more time to reprofile if you wanted something different.

I've 4 sebs over the past 20 years. I've always tried to get the original or spa fresh edge to last as long as possible by regular stropping. First time on the Sharpmaker they all took a little extra work (some more than others) to get what I consider to be very sharp. After that first time they required less effort to maintain than most of my other knives. One of these days I hope get a Wicked Edge or Edge Pro, but meanwhile the Sharpmaker does do a very decent job, especially if you invest in the coarse and ultra fine rods.

Perfect. I agree! About to open my new small 21. Sure I've done it many times before....And all of you are correct. Different strokes for different folks. I just like to enjoy some fine things in life. Why do people still buy Jordan's then? There are others.
Well said .
