You start getting the chills and it's over 100 degs in front of the forge. So I Quit for the day. I can't remember if its the beginning of heat exhaustion or its about to snow inside my shop:eek: . Any body know the fact on this?

I believe it's called 'heat stroke' and very dangerous.

I try to get all my forging done before it gets too hot and finish knives in the AC during the summer months. I love AC :D

This is one of the syptoms for heat exhaustion. It means you are on the brink of heat-stroke... NOT GOOD my friend.

Typically another syptom that comes around this same time is you'll notice you actually STOP SWEATING.

When this happens, you need to stop, find a cooler place, and drink water.... lots of it. At our last safety meeting for work, they said it's actually better to drink room temp water. It's less of a shock to the system.

Lou,
I know exactly what you mean and yes this is a danger signal. It was 140f in the shop today and I have to constantly pay attention to my body to avoid trouble. Since it is always cooler outside, when I feel the chill I usually go outside for a walk. And yes when its this hot you want room temp liquids NO ICE, unless you want major cramping and headaches(kinda like PMS). Make sure you drink enough.
I also have found that eating heavy foods can lead to cramping when its this hot. Funnily enough though I have found that salty potato chips make me feel good when not over done. I know that you sweat out alot of salt and this seems to be a good way to replace some of it. Its also bananas for breakfast.
Thanks,
Del

yep if your not sick of drinking water and taking a leak every 30 min your on your way to dehydation

good way to go aobut it is 32 Oz gator aid to every gal water. if by the end of the day you dont ahve a white shirt you may need more salt/patassaium
while in the corp adn at 29 stumps / over seas 120+ heat i was drinking over 5 gal a day and eating all i could to replace the "salts" and minerals

you should be "going" clear and if not drink water. getttign cold adn not sweatign is like real close to "F"ing your self up

take care out there most ppl dont know what its like to be hyderated
coffe/tea bad
soda bad
beer bad (least in this case)
all suck water out of you

water and juice vege or friut the order of the day
gatoraid in moderation is good fro you they mix it stornger then you need so thats not al you have to drink (probley also so it sells well as at the right strenth tast littel more then jsut water)

I knew that..................... Still 140 anywhere is B R U T A L.

(walks away babbling about blacksmiths and forges and damascus.................)

Changed a bridge motor on our hot metal crane @ work last night. It was a balmy 182F. Kinda like hell I would imagine, only without the creature comforts. As already stated just watch for the time when you STOP sweating. If you think boy I'm gona have to stop and take a breal as soon as I finish....(whatever the hell you're doing) just stop NOW. Set it down and walk away. When you think you area in trouble it's too late. If you suffer a heat stroke, even a mild one, you will not be able to take the heat near as well again. Whatever you were doing couln't have been that important since you didn't even show us all any pics!:D
Take care,
Matt

Its been hot last few days dave. Today is wicked hot and its sticky. the sticky dont help either dave you know how it is here. rather be down south on a hot day then connecticut.

In the Army, we were taught that there are 3 levels of heat injury
1. Heat exhaustion.....pretty much self explanatory as are
2. heat cramps
3 heat stroke.......the worst....potentially fatal. One of the signs is what Nick said. You stop sweating. The stroke part is not the actual ailment. It is the result. What happens is that your body can no longer regulate it's temperature. Kind of the opposite of hypothermia. The body temperature can rise so high that it "cooks" your brain like a 105+ degree fever can in adults. You have a stroke s a result of this elevevated temperature in your brain and that is not good. One of the things that is worrysome about your symptoms is that anyone who has had a fever as an adult over about 101.5 knows the sensation of having uncontrollable chills even when you are buried under every blanket in the house.
One of the other things that the Army teaches is that if you don't feel like you have to pee constantly, you are not drinking enough water in a hot climate. When I am forging, I keep a 42 ounce cup on the washing machine and every time I still the steel back in the forge, I religiously go have a drink.

Dave,
I'm not an expert, but unfortunately, experienced, and it is serious, and after the first time, it seemed to be easier to be negatively impacted by excess heat.
First time for almost heat stroke, was as a teenage unloading boxcars in mid summer.
Last time was 12 or so years ago ...company golf outing, attendance pretty much required....didn't finish that round.
Joe described to a "T" the symptoms for heat stroke I had every symptom, but the stroke, I think...and if you get there you are already in trouble.....If you get to heat exhaustion, stop, get water, get in front of a fan, get in the house if it is cooler, ask your spouse to keep an eye on you.

When I was young, salt tablets were recommended....they just made me nausious....
Thank-you to guys who answered Dave's question....I got more knowledge too.

Be careful....it is very serious

If you keep a big bottle of room temperature water or gatorade around, remember that it's a great place for germs to multiply. Pour it into a seperate cup before you drink it. That keeps backwash out of the main container.

good call on the germs

i can tell you this i try to drink at least 6L of water on days like this and more if i can stand it (my water jugs get empty fast )

Butch did you ever use one of those duck flax water bags out at 29 palms? It could be 130 degrees outside but that water was cool as can be. Funny how good low tech stuff works so well.
I always had one hanging on the mirror of my 5 ton.
