I know it's not good when...

frequent, copious, and clear. The desert hikers' catchphrase!

I use "room" temperature water when I'm working in the hot- but room temperature for my faucet is often a lot less than the "room" I'm in! I don't go in much for gatorade, but I grab a plum and mix some light fresh homemade lemonade and suchlike as I go. Seems to work.

Chilled water is GREAT in a spray bottle, though.

I can do 8 liters in a day no problem, remember that the old saw about 1 gallon gets you a day in the desert is assuming you aren't doing much!

I'm a welder (not yet a forger) so I have some experience with standing over hot steel for 8-12 hours at a stretch (having to wear heavy clothes/leathers, respirator, and helmet doesn't help at all). Some days I'll drink 3-4 gallons at work. Keep a jug on hand - if you start feeling dizzy, light-headed, cramped-up, or have trouble concentrating........you should have had a drink ten minutes ago. And eat some fresh fruit or veggies - bananas, oranges, apples, tomatoes, etc. (gotta replace all the minerals you're sweating out and the sugars/starches will help get your energy back up).

Have a good one,

Nathan

when i was working hard at my other job i was drinking abut 2.5-3 gal a day now that im at the grinder i seem not to need as much but boy do i suck water when hand sanding in this heat

Just a thought. Maybe we should have a shop safety sticky. That way we can collect info like this in one thread and keep it in plain sight to remind everybody.

back in my navy days we had salt dispensers on the bulk heads .. get salted :)
in the engine room it would get up to 140 degs all the times we were in getmo cuba. that was in the blown air coming in 2 decks down and mixing,, ....HOT
I've been cold and clammy and then get an a bad head ache after, I've been that way a few times, I'm sure that has something to do with the brain damage I have now  :D Dave, now you know, be safe guy...

One thing that people are missing in this thread however is that it's not just keeping hydrated, that's important, but almsot not as important as keeping your body salts up as well. Eat something salty / drink something wiht a lot of electolytes in addition to drinking a lot of water. Too much water without enough salts will leach the salts in your body out (in addition to the loss from sweat) and can kill you as well.

hey dan ever miss the smell of JP5 on the ship ahhaha i was at an air show not long ago and was like ooo that smeel again (i know its a sickness)

im down 3L so far on the day and all ive been doing is rearanging the shop(2 hours)

Hi Butch,
The only time I got to smell the JP5 was when I had time off from below decks. I Was stationed on the USS Forestal in the late 70's. It was a hot in the main rooms when I had watch down there.

i floated around onthe uss guam LPH9 (her last cruise) and the batton (her first)
looked down th snake hole on the guam but was a good marine so i never had to "help out" down there had mess duty for the ward room on the batton and i saw some nice 130-140 and steam washing dishes that sucked for 10 hours a day
since i also was part of a TRAP team. i spent days on end on the hangerdeck while there was air on station over land and sea jsut in case we needed to move quick to bring them back and FUBAR the plane or helo

Lloyd JP5 sux big time :thumbdn: haha
I ran a lot of that through the purifiers for 3 years in the FW engine room, the fumes from that crap was great in 40 ft seas to help you to puke when you needed to :D
