I know the temptation to leap toward fixed blade knives for practical edc applications, but any reasonable person would exhaust the folding knife possibilities first.

Depends what you want in a knife, any folder would be useless for what I use a fixed blade for other than perhaps a larger triad lock folder. I prefer a fixed blade anyway, folders are for smaller/lighter tasks.

If I "exhausted" a folders capabilities I'd have a broken knife.

If you're on this forum knives are probably a lot more to you than just tools to get you through your day-to-day. With that in mind, I strongly recommend that you buy and carry what you want, not just what you need (within legal limits, of course). I've started playing with fixed blade EDC. Why? Because I like to change things up! I saw the Schrade Sharpfinger, a design I've always loved, offered in 1095 and I figured, "Why not try carrying that?" So I got one, picked up a custom sheath and I carry it on my belt pretty frequently and very much enjoy it!

your other post made me think you were a civivi shill... (kinda still do)

this one makes me think, ... wha? just try to troll every prac tac person in a 1 liner - grats - you did it...
calling people who suggest fixed blades for sd, unreasonable... literally translates to either you are or they are

I'm betting 99% of bf will be against you on this one, but gl

hopefully not too many will fall for the troll bait

*opens popcorn*

You have my permission to consider me unreasonable, then. I carry a folder for back-up to my primary fixed blade EDC knife. It's been this way since the early '80s. But, since I have a reason for carrying a fixed blade when a folder is obviously ALL I WOULD EVER NEED WERE I ONLY A BIT MORE REASONABLE, I guess that makes me something of a conundrum then, doesn't it?

Both have their place. A folder is easier to carry, so that's what I carry most of the time. A FB is always in my day pack for hiking, and there's always one in the SUV.

Not exactly sure what I read there, but I like knives, and my main EDC is a fixed one.

Does nearly everything that a folder does, except fold... (In hopefully most circumstances :) )

Hope this helps answering your question? statement? assumption?

And I always believed myself a reasonable man. I always learn something here - not always but often eye-opening (as opposed to a ‘fixed stare’).

Some of us (many?) enjoy variety in this hobby. To suggest one must exhaust their search for a suitable, desirable EDC by considering only/all folders first is a ridiculous idea. After accumulating many folders (but not all) I simply grew bored; expanded to custom fixed blades and haven’t been happier. I can see where that might be unreasonable to some (well, maybe to one). 😉
