I like knives because... ??

To ponder all variables too closely is to dilute it's essence.

I like knives because they spare me the indignity of opening packages with my teeth like some kind of savage animal.

Well they are one a man's oldest tools...maybe going back to the hand axe...that was as much a knife as it was an axe. I like guns too but the problem there is that the level of responsibility that goes along with gun ownership, and the care which must be taken to safely handle them, makes it kind of hard to "play" with guns. Let's face it, you play with a gun, somebody is going to die or be horribly injured and they'll probably toss you in jail or barring that...you will be sued into oblivion.

Worst thing that can happen with the biggest, sharpest knife is maybe you cut your self...hell maybe you drop it and cut your own toe off...but it is not going to go through 4 layers of drywall and a door and blow somebody's baby out of the crib.

PLUS...you can tinker and mod your knives with very little risk of doing much more that making the thing look ugly. Mod a gun without a lot of skill and it blows up and kills somebody or it slam fires and now you've manufactured a machine gun and you go to prison.

PLUS you get to sharpen knives which is fun.

I love the incredible usefulness of knives, I mean there is no other tool that can do what a good knife can do. I mean you can whittle a stake, split wood for the fire, build a shelter, defend your loved ones and yourself, and use it in a variety of ways you shouldn't (screwdriver, etc.). Plus knives are just plain awesome.

I like knives just because...... Before I used to carry knives a lot I thought knives were cool but rarely felt I NEEDED a knife in my day to day tasks. Now that I have a decent quality knife I find myself looking for excuses to use it :) In fact, now I see so many tasks that are best handled with a knife...seems like I had needed one all along and just didn't know it :D

I hear ya man! Definitely my personal experience as well...hehe!

I like knives because they make up for one of many shortfalls of the human body

Useful... and more Useful. They're tools, and also, they can be seen as emergency equipment. Stuck in a car, caught by a scarf, or natural disasters, these will all require a cutting tool. After a disaster, a knife can be used to cut out bandaids, cut food, open cans, and more. There're enough stories of a knife being used to save someone that it's a viable to carry a knife. Aside from that, there's day to day stuff. Make the hole in a coffee cup bigger, so you can drink faster. Open packages, cut those threads from clothes, open letters, and all that.

And they're sharp. And nicely engineered equipment. In fact, you can say that a knife is one of the first tools used by mankind. And you're exercising second amendment rights.

'Cause they are a simple, elegant tool you can carry in your pocket.

In the old Tarzan movies, what was the first thing Tarzan asked for upon encountering civilized people?

"Tooth, sharp tooth"

"Oh, he means a knife"

Or something like that as I remember.

I like knives because I have a intense fascination with a Sharp edge. From the first time I held a knife my focus instantly went to how and why a piece of steel could be so sharp. I've spent the better part of my life finding the answer to my questions only to realize I have just started my adventure that will take a lifetime to complete.

Some years back my sister called me up and asked me why my two year old nephew was using his toast like a gun and his hot dog as a sword/knife.

I told her it was because he was a completely normal little boy and if she didn't mess with him and his innate likes, he would turn into a completely normal young man.

Appreciation for weapons and tools is simply a part of most of us.

The aspect that form follows function appeals to me, and knives represent this. It is in a mans soul to "quest" and that is where and why the "One Knife / Grail Knife is so popular here and around the campfire. My father was a military man who early in his life was seduced by the same quest, and when he died in his mid seventies, the knife in his pocket was a little Buck 425 C. He insisted on always carrying a knife, but for the last half of his life as far as I am aware of, he never had the need to EDC a knife "longer than his finger". He was not brand loyal, but would wear the blade until it started to look like a toothpick and then replace it. When asked by people the reason he carried a knife, his most common answer was "In case YOU need one". (Emphasis mine.)

I like using knives because they are incredibly useful and fun to use. I like collecting knives because the technology, materials, and craftsmanship behind knives impresses me and interests me.
