I like knives because... ??

I'm not in to high end knifes, just the opposite I like traditional simple knives, friction folders for example so for me it's not the precision high tech materials (though I do appreciate this in other things), but I still share the same feelings as most have expressed.
I'm sure there is something harking back a long way that just seems right about using a knife, instinctive if you like.
I'm a bit of collector of hammers as well, & love using them (panel beater), same thing I wonder? Also one of, if not the first tool used.

I just love 'em. Held off collecting for years and I finally got started.

Knives and flashlights go together, been on CPF for 8 years.

I love precision and functional art also.

My wife hates them. ("KNIVES CREEP ME OUT!!!") I need pointers on how to handle that...

For me, knives give something for me to do, talk about, use (but never abuse), debate about, and learn about. There is such a variety of knives to discuss, and each one has its own kind of story, however cheesy it may sound. Everything from the custom, handmade elegant pieces of Damascus steel to the cheapo fleamarket gas station stuff has its strange appeal. Think about how many times you've said to yourself when seeing a knife that you havent seen before "Whoa, I need to check that out!". Unforunatley, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so not everyone will feel the same way a blade lover does. Next time, when they are out buying something you really know they don't need, say the same thing back. Ex. "You're buying (insert object here) again?"

I like knives because of the times, places and people that I have been in contact with as a result of them. A knife has a very primal appeal for me also it is one of the first and simplest tools which allowed us to change our environment to suit us, a hand held object that takes the place of millions of years of evolution. A knife can create or destroy, save a life or take it away, if seen for what it is, a tool and used wisely you can enjoy them, and then begin to appreciate all a knife can teach you about design, function, chemistry, physics, aesthetics and craftsmanship, the longer you appreciate knives the more you realise there is to learn about them.

I think it's due to the fact that the knife is one of the first tools ever invented along with the fact that knives have more uses than most other tools

I don't know. I'll ask my psychiatrist tomorrow.
In the mean time, I came up with a theory:
knife=weapon
you+weapon=increased confidence
increased confidence is the result of an in increase of serotonin in your brain... so knife=increased serotonin which feels good to the brain.
Is just a theory but I think it might be right.

This thread really got me giggling, and I love dallastxco's theory, which probably comes closest to the truth--at least in my case. Although... I love all knives--even those that don't really qualify as weapons. I have to say, though, that I love the ones that do the most--makes me want some swords, which is truly hard to rationalize. When I was four, I became fascinated with Tarzan, who had his knife, and my Dad gave me a small Western Bowie when I was five... I think that dunnit... : )

Buy her one! My wife's getting an ESEE Izula II for her purse for Christmas--whether she likes it or not! : )

I love knives because I have a use for them, of course I over justify buying anything new, but in the end I can just add it to my EDC rotation, Give it as a gift later, and have a backup for the backup to my EDC I carry. I love the fact in knowing I have a tool with me that can do almost anything I ask of it, and lets face it, knives are just awesome pieces of art you can carry with you all day. All in all i'm the same way with guns and Converse shoes now, They're things I like and things I use very very often.

Haha no need for a reason. The tread makes me feel a bit more normal.lol. Everytime my girlfriend makes a knife comment. "another knife" or why so many. My response is usually why so many handbags or shoes!

EXACTLY!! At least you can use a knife for something, and doesn't go "out of fashion." :p Truth be told I bet chicks spend way more money on clothes etc than us guys do on knives ;)

Another reason I like knives is the beauty and primal simplicity of their function. They do exactly what they're supposed to do without fanfare or complexity. In a world filled with "overdoneness", a knife is the exact opposite. They're tools that can help you defend yourself, feed yourself, shelter yourself, rescue yourself and and provide warmth for yourself. A knife does not limit you, it enhances you and makes you more effective in the natural world.

I have always liked knives even as a young kid in elementary school. It was part of the life I grew up with where it was totally normal to have a knife of some sort in your pocket and a 22 rifle cradled in your arms. I maintain that tradition today and try to show young kids the usefulness of having a knife in your pocket. Most kids today for the most part just think mostly in terms of tactical knives. The single parent "families" are the worst. But that is a start. They'll learn and a knife will become part of their everyday lives.

I don't try to convinve people to see things my way. Don't really care anymore.

Because all of Gods creatures have built in tools... claws, sharp teeth, speed, beaks, fur ect. Humans are born with more subtle survival tools... my knife is my "claw" and once you get use to that kind of utility you feel naked without it. It offers protection, prying, digging, cutting, scratching and opening. Nothing too useful in a a civilized society but there sure are times that I've been glad to have my knife.

I think it's something we like on a more primal level, deep in the back of our minds we know that when you take away all the bull shit we are just animals and you know this when you meet a wolf in the park and it's staring at you and you think "if it attack me, I'm at the least going to hurt it really bad" and that is enough to keep it away. For me a knife defines freedom, security and power. I know it has the potential to save my life (in addition to edc utility) which is enough to draw me in, it can seem silly but that is why I love knives and that is why they are worth so much to me. If I was born with Wolverines metal claws then I'd have no use for a knife :p

Because they are both functional(so many times at work someone will be need something cut, realize they have nothing to cut it with, then come over to me and be like "Hey can I use your knife real quick?", it's even happened with people who in the past wondered why I would need to carry a knife) and aesthetically appealing. The functional part is easy to explain, the aesthetics part, well, either you do or you don't, same as any other thing. I mean, I can blast some tech death metal as I'm driving down the road, and enjoy every minute of it-another person would find it unlistenable, and then proceed to crank up the latest Pitbull album, the one that they find amazing and the one I would never listen to if I had any say in the matter. Same thing-I can find knives(or really, any form of blade) attractive and enjoy the look and feel of them, while someone else wouldn't give a rat's ass about them, instead preferring to admire their stamp, or coin, or action figure, or whatever collection.

I relate and agree with all of the previous reasons, all of which have been very well stated.
