Sorry for your loss
I lost my "mentor"/father about 15 years ago
As some of you know
I used to spend my summers in the Rockie Mt.s with my father
He taught me how to gut a trout and run your finger in the spine to get out the black "gunk" out
He showed me how to get wet grass and put it in your creel to keep them fresh
He told me the "tepee" method of starting a fire is the best
He taught me how to ty a hook to fishing line
How if you are fishing a SMALL creek (like 4 ft wide) for brook trout, to "make sure you are stealth upon entry to avoid 'spooking' them"
And how to spit on the whetstone before sharpening a knife....
He took me to his special aspen grove near Osier, CO and I carved my name next to his and HIS dad's
(It's still there last time I looked about 8 yrs ago)
He showed me ho to make a slingshot out of a cottonwood branch, a rubber tire, and a leather shoe tongue (I still got it!!! :thumbup

Just like his dad taught him....
Every time I go to Colorado now
Just the SMELL of the Rocky Mt's reminds me of him
I've had many opportunities to sell my house and property and make a good chunk of money
I refuse to do it
That place has so many memories for me
The thought of not having a place to stay when I visit is scary
I guess I'm just a deeply sentimental guy...
Just think of the little "tips" he taught you and pass them on
That would be a great tribute
Did you have his knives?
I found my dad's knives and they are the most cherished items in my collection
And my old man was a cheapo too!!!
A bunch of Imperials
Not worth much on EBAY
But, priceless to me!!
The best tribute would be to WEAR and use one of his knives
Or give it to your son and tell him what a great outdoorsman he was...
Smoke sent
These type of posts bum me out

But, life goes on
Time heals all wounds...I believe....
