I lost my knife on a kayaking trip. its belongs to the river now. but it had been mine for 15 years. I am trying to find a replacement but it seems I cant. I'm not a knife connoisseur by any means but I would like to see if any of you have any ideas about how to source the same knife. it was a Timberline chameleon the number on the blade was 10413. As I stated about my affinity for knives..... well I don't know if this was particularly well sought after knife or a very good knife in the world of all things Knife'y. I grew attached to it and the shape and feel, as I used it quite a bit. So enough from me, id love any info or help on finding another. thanks in advance.

There's a Want to Buy section in the "Exchange" here. I don't know the rules well enough to know if you are allowed post there at your membership level. I don't think it's going to be easy to replace, at least not quickly. It wasn't the type of knife that people hoarded. You might be better off asking for suggestions for similar knives.

well then i should add that i am open to suggestions for new knives that are similar. Thanks Spy ;-)

What's your budget? Any features you prefer like blade style, steel, size, handle material, lock type, manual/assisted, etc.?

Search Camillus Chameleon in google. It seems they are still selling them. Probably an updated model.

Note that the Camillus name was bought by another company. I doubt it will be the exact same knife.

Jimmy my budget is kind of open because if the nostalgia factor, but i guess id really liike one with the same features as the knife i had.

imberline SideLock Vallotton

AUS-8 stainless steel blade

this is a description of a knife with similar features as the knife i had.

Oh sorry you said Timberline. I don't know why I read Camillus.

Seems like Vallotton designed the Chameleon.

Hi Noland -

I found one in stock at one online retailer in 10 seconds by searching google with "timberline vallotton chameleon 10413" -

It seems like a fairly spendy knife, but it is a DA automatic so there is some complexity.

Sorry to hear you lost your trusty old friend, never a good thing or feeling.....

best

yeah the one i had was not the D/A auto. it was just a standard folding knife without the serrated blade, and i may add i thought about buying it anyway and making for a nice upgrade to my original knife but it is sold out.

With a budget (kind of) open

Why not buy a much upgraded Butch Vallotton; something with a similar design by the original designer but way better custom build quality and upgraded materials?

Just a thought.

You found the chameleon? I could only find the vallotton signature series and I'd be hesitant to recommend that because I don't trust tip down a/o's.

Certainly looks like a Vallotton.

Maybe check out a Kizer Begleiter? Same size, better materials, similar shape and nicely priced.

Or the Gerber Air Ranger. Undoubtedly an inferior knife, but ticks most of the boxes and is cheap enough to lose.

Or swing for the fence and get a Spartan Harsey. They're expensive but should last multiple lifetimes.

I can't give a link, but there is a very similar knife I found cheap. Google this:
Timberline Vallotton Signature - Large - Serrated
Should be the top result. New old stock under $10.

T.L.E. that top pic is the knife I so dearly miss... The ones you posted look very similar and look as though they would qualify to be my next full time carry.

I know you want another Timberline chameleon but here are so many models that are so much better. Aus-8 steel alone is outdated. Look into a model like a Zero Tolerance 0450 to replace your old favorite.

Hope you find a replacement. I would suggest you also consider carrying a cheaper or easily replaced knife kayaking along with a well secured favorite knife. I carry a Gerber River Shorty on my vest kayaking for emergencies and it can cut sufficiently for occasional knife use around the river.

I agree with many of the other posts that it is time for an upgrade. I think you will see people suggest knives anywhere from $20 to $500. I say you pick a price cap and you will be sure to get the best suggestions for that price
