This is my first nicer sheath. I have done a few other sheaths before it, but they were just barely(sp?) functional. mtnfolkmike and I have been E-mailing back and forth, and he has been answering alot of my questions, so thanks Mike! The sheath is for a knife from Brian Andrews (I will have a review up tomorrow). Not much time to type, so here are the pics:

Looks good buddy. I like how that it is traditional. Very fitting with your knife design.

wow.. that came out great Brendan... nice work man... especially for a first one... i have never tried to make one of those scandi sheaths...

That is terrific looking. Can you do a step-by-step? I too am thinking of doing some leather work...

1) Case the leather a little better when you make your lines - they will be a little deeper. Also - you can use your stitch groover to make those lines.

2) Let the leather dry completely before you move on to the next step - it looks like you got it a little mushy as you worked.

3) Use a stitch groover for your stitches and an over stitcher when done - they will look a little cleaner.

4) Use a thinner leather - fold it over and make your strap out of that - it will look a little cleaner.

5) Sand your edges flat and use Gum Tag or wax to burnish the edges. They will come out looking glassy and look like one solid piece (for the most part).

With all of this said - this is REALLY minor stuff - I think - for the most part it looks great. I really do.

I think, as it is, it really fits the style of the blade. I think you did REALLY well.

That turned out nice Brendan.

What did you use for a liner?

I was originally going to use wood, but i didnt want it to be too heavy and i thought that if the wood got wet it would get moldy. So i bought a plastic one from ragnar. The dimentions of the liner were off by like 1/16'', but that was no problem, i just did a little filing on the inside and all was well. The liner has a drainage hole too. The knife still outshines the sheath, but it is better than the moar sheath i was using up until today.

thanks for the pointers TF

You did a good job with it. Did you treat it with wax? I did a sheat from my rehandled Mora using thin leather and a plastic liner. It really firmed up with a dip in beeswax mixture. The knife snaps in place.

I did the belt loop a little different. Mine is functional but it has that "trained monkey" flair to it that I do so well.

I treated it with somthing called carnauba cream, It basically applies like car wax and you can polish it to make it shine. It didnt make it hard like beeswax or parrafin though. I like the way you did your loop, I think that is one of the two more traditional ways. I didnt have a peice of leather long enough for that, so i had to get creative. that mora and sheath both look great
