I might get killed for this.

Here's the deal,
I'm 21 years old. I was 20 when I got my Sebenza. I figure my Sebenza ($443) will last me for my entire life (50 or so more years) that comes up to $8.86 a year, that's a bargain in my opinion. Oh and that comes up to $0.02 a day.
I'm happy with that math.
Anyways though, it's true, my Kershaw Blur could handle my tasks as well as my Sebenza, JYD, or SNG do. But I prefer to have something that is oozing with quality, was built to be the perfect tool for life.
That's just my preference.
When I first started out, I wouldn't have spent $300+ on a knife. But now that I have and I've seen the quality, the craftsmanship, the hard work, and everything it takes to make the perfect tool, $300+ doesn't seem like such a bad deal for a Sebenza or other knives.
I love my knives and am happy to have and own them. They're amazing and perfect to me. And that's what matters.

Oh, and I do use all of them for a bit of everything. I find joy out of using the heck out of my $400 knives. =]

hey mr cnc pro im a machinist too. a real one. i know what goes into making an axis lock by hand cause im on my 8th one now. nothing funny or false about my post.

If you say so pal.
So, never again will you buy a Benchmade, but you are perfectly content stealing their designs for yourself.

Funniest post on the forum right there.

I think your product is way overpriced, and will never buy it until you lower it by 2/3.

Pride of ownership and this..
I buy thousand dollar knives because I like to look good when cutting.

..and who is Chris Reeves? Does he also make knives? I know of Chris Reeve, I've got a handfull of these boxes laying around

go get it from the chinese then. still one of the few things thats actually cheaper to buy american still

No that's ok.
I also don't buy anything made from sand castings...cheap junk that costs too much.

So you know what age your gonna die? That math makes no sense. I could order a sebenza today, and die 30 mins later going to the store.

I am sitting at the laptop, babysitting an ill kid who is napping, and saw this thread on the main screen. Would like to add a bit.

1. First, we DO see a lot of these general type posts (are XYZ knives worth it, is supersecretvodoo steel with ultraman heattreatment known only to three in the universe that much better than others), and that is cool. When i was a teenager, we didn't have forums, and we did not have such opportunity to discuss and pontify and whatever. very few total novel questions in knifedom, anyway, and despite the congruence in questions, we almost always see something new in response.
2. While I appreciate the argument supra relating clothes and food to blades, I respectively do not agree that they are all of such sufficient fungibility for the articluated Universal Field Theory of Economics of Knives, so to speak.
3. I have had, held, used, and some variation therein a whole lot of blades, with a whole lot of money sunk also therein. Most I have moved on. What is in my pocket as I type, what is in my pocket at work, what is in my pocket out and and about, is a 1st generation spydervo manix.
4. For me, not necessarily anyone else, "pride of ownership" comes from my made in usa, fits my hand and my left-handedness perfectly, great steel, takes and holds an edge, is super-quick and easy to take out with one hand, manix. Ironically, i tried to sell it on bladeforums a year or two ago, no takers, and only after I revisited the blade did i realize i was seeking to move the knife for the latest, the greatest, the hip-hop-potatest whatever. Silly moi.
5. I know that, for example, CRK's have amazing tolerances and are exquisite. i ain't hating, but my s30v blade is centered, doesn't wobble, and doesn't play up and down. The CRK's just do not work for me. If I need tighter tolerances, a quicker deployment, or a tighter lockup, my solution is a fixed blade.
6. And, nevermind, it is enough of miracle if anyone has read this far, as it is. Thanks for your time and for letting me play.cwd

Listen to what Chris says says around 10:15 in part 2.

When you see all the work and attention to detail that goes into making some of these knives you'll understand where the price comes from. There is intrinsic value in them. The tolerances and precision is unbelievable. So no, I wouldn't compair high end knives to designer purses. In that case you're just buying a name.

However, yes you are right. My Benchmade 707 will tackle everything my Small Sebenza will too. But there is something about having that feel and precision that you just can't explain. Hell I've spent more money on stupidities in the past. You can pay $400 bucks for a smartphone you'll have for a couple years, or you can spend $400 bucks on a knife that will literally last a lifetime and come with a lifetime warranty as well.

I didn't see these You Tube videos in Chris Reeve Knives under "The Manufacturers Forum". I think they would make a good Sticky. Hope the mods feel this way also.

sorry, figured as a metals guy you would understand the benefits of an iron block.

Thats how I know that sand castings are junk. I machined them for years. As you have already said, full of hot / hard spots, sand pockets, and horribly inconsistant.
Anything die cast is of a much higher quality.

in regards to the sebenza in general. Ive had 3 pass through me, a small plain, large plain and finally a small insingo(all s35vn). I found i loved them, there nothing like them. But they also came with a problem that i could not get over when you see the price and the problem in comparison. I am not sure if it is just the s35vn steel but they could not keep an edge, and in addition to that they didnt even come that sharp. I still held onto them because i love the look, feel and over satisfaction they give you but i dont want to spend that kind of money on something that wont make me happy to the fullest.

Apparently the OP is only talking about folders. I agree to a small extent of usefulness to price ratio of mid techs vs. production. I buy what I want because I want it. I see far more difference in fixed blades when used hard. As far as "expensive" knives I like having to hone or sharpen my higher end steels. That being said, Scrapyard is still my favorite knives, even though I have Busses, Swamprats, CRK and Hinderers because they are, in my opinion, are tough and cheap and that's my sweet spot.
P.s. my favorite fixed in my collection-SYKCO SOD
Folder- Grayman SATU

So you're a troll and a thief?? Go back under your bridge and leave the intelligent conversation to us grown adults.

An American, a Frenchman, and a Russian were walking along the beach. They came across a bottle, brushed the sand off of it, and a genie came out!

The genie granted each a single wish. The American said, "My neighbor at home has a fine knife collection. I would like to have one like it." And so it was done.

The Frenchman said, "My neighbor has beautiful paintings in his house. I would like to have some like them." And so it was done.

The Russian said, "My neighbor has a herd of goats, much nicer than mine. I wish they would die......."
