I just got back from Acadid national park and i used a antique boyscout hatchet because thats all i had except for a axe. And i thought it would have been to big for camping So What are some good places too look. I life fiskars but i like wood handles and i like Granfors Bruks But not there price. I need one Because i will use it for firewould for home and im going to baxter state park camping next year and i want to be prepared.

you can't go wrong with any of the gransfors and bruks axe's... i have the wildlife hatchet, it works great for all around camp needs... i also have the mini.... it's a crazy sharp little tool... performs very well for it's size...

Gransfors sounds pricey but when you consider how much you'd pay for a hand forged knife with a perfect edge and a 25 year warranty, it's cheap and, you know you will end up getting the Gransfors in the long run so you might as well just get it now.

I like the Small Forest Axe for camping but I would want the larger Scandavian Axe for chopping wood at home. If your primary use is chopping wood and you will be driving or canoeing to your camping areas then you might go with the larger axe.

As far as a camp ax, I really like the look of the Estwing 26" Camp Ax w/ the metal handle (because I know I'd miss once or twice, hehe).

I agree on the 19" handled Wetterliings- really nice axe for the cash. I would like to have the GB but I doubt I could get "that" much real difference in performance from it. I have been very please with both my Wetterlings.

Addition: I am also working to reclaim and old double bit head- profile one edge thin for axe work and the other heavier for light splitting. Cutting down a 26" handle to 20". Should be a pretty handy tool.

I will 2nd that on the Ganfors burks I have a small forest axe that takes care of most camp chores, and a mini for the smaller task I also use the mini durnig deer season as my main field dressing tool they really hold a great edge.

Another vote for Wetterlings...and I don't own one:D I actually have a Wildlife and Small Forest Axe from GB, but I handled a Wetterling and with a little work they can finished up to par with GB. For the budget minded, Wetterlings are a very functional bargain. There are two in my sights right now...

another vote for the wetterlings.

if you can stand plastic handles the fiskars is really great too. i have the hatchet but really want to get the larger chopper to see how it performs.

Hit the flea markets and garage sales, find yourself an old Kelly, collins, or Plumb in good shape. Nothing beats the quality of these fine axes(IMHO).

By camp axe I assume you mean a 3/4 size axe, like a Hudson Bay type axe?

Not as expensive as a Gransfors, but still a forged axe with a wood handle is the Snow & Neally Hudson Bay axe:
HudsonBayCampAxe.jpg

It has a 1.75 pound head on a 24" hickory handle

There's also the excellent Forest Axe by Iltis Oxhead:

Head weight is 2.75 lb. Hickory handle 28” long.

Slightly smaller is the Snow & Neally Penobscot Bay kindling axe (bottom one in pic, top one is a mini maul:

The Pen Bay has the same size and weight head as the Hudson Bay with an 18" handle.

I just scored this Wetterlings HUNTING AXE 16" for $25:D

http://www.888knivesrus.com/product/WETHUNTMED/WETTERLINGS_SAW16H_HUNTING_AXE_16.html

It shaved right from the shop and does actually shave above the skin after a few seconds on a strop:eek:

The grind isn't perfectly even all the way, but the balance is very good and it feels great.

I have 5 Wetterlings axes; Large splitting axe to the mini camping axe:)

Fit and finish isn't up to a Gransfors Bruks axe, but since I can hand pick the ones I buy the difference is very small. I have seen a few Wetterlings axes that had pretty bad grinds and hafts that weren't too good, the GB axes have all been fine (not perfect though).

Marbles offers some nice ones..

Another vote for Gransfor Bruks. Get a wildlife hatchet or a small forest axe and you'll never want another brand. However, you may want some more GBs. :D

I'm going to say go a little heavy, get a 3# rafting axe by Council Tools. For $20 it's a good pro grade model, & American made.

I've got a wetterlings forrest axe; very nice handmade axe which you can make sharp... Scary sharp :D I like sharp.

Took this one with me to Sweden and it did everything I needed it to; cutting down (dead) trees for wood and shelter, chopping firewood and chopping and hamering tent pegs.
