I need a chopper

My hatchet works better than any knife I own as far as chopping goes. But when you see someone with a thread that has "need" in it, you know the credit card is close at hand.

That browning suggested is pretty nice.

I see that someone already suggested the knife I would tell you to get..the Browning Crowell Barker Chopper..it does have kind of a large handle, so if you have small handles, that might be an issue. A great chopper for about $90 on the secondary market...and it will out chop most knives out there. Gene

The Browning is an impressive chopper and slices better than I could have imagined. The 1085 is a tough steel that is easy to maintain. Barker and Crowell designed a winner - tapered tang, convex edge.

Eh ghad! That Browning is indeed a good looking knife!! Is it a sleeper? That is, I haven't seen it discussed much on these forums-- or perhaps it has been discussed and I've just missed it. Either way, I'm definitely going to research that blade and consider it on my 'to buy' list.

If you want to go cheap, then there's two options: Fiskars hatchet or Ka-Bar Large Heavy Bowie, depending on whether you want a hatchet or a large knife.

If you can afford spending about a 100 bucks or so, then going with a Ranger Knives RD9 is never a bad idea, especially if you intend to really beat on the knife. My RD9 has been through hell in the couple of months I've had it here, chopping, prying and batoning through more or less completely frozen wood, poking some holes in the ice and even some throwing. No problems whatsoever. Justin has great customer service, and if you want your knife customized a little (or a lot), he'll fix you up for very reasonable prices. Pretty much the only downsides to a Ranger that I can think of are the fact that you won't find them in stock at the local cutlery retailer and that the fit and finish isn't always exactly perfect (but then, for a knife that's meant to be a user, I'm not entirely sure why it should matter that much).

I agree with brians, the Browning Barker-Crowell design is quite good. I think Scott Gossman picked one up as well. For the price, it's an excellent deal...not too many tapered tangs or convex edges on production blades. Mine hasn't been through too many paces, but it definately seems to be a workhorse.

He mentioned that he could not afford a Busse when he first posted this thread, it wasn't an edit. I know because I was the first person to open this thread after he posted it. He literally recommended the exact knife that he said he wasn't interested in right now.

Calm down. Im sure CEIW just overlooked it.

And as far as chopper. During my research the Browning seemed like the best bang for the buck.

You're not looking for a full sized machete, but what about a 12" Ontario or similarly sized Tramontina? They sharpen up well and make great choppers. Plus, they are inexpensive.

Ok you guys talked me into a browning :). I just ordered it, I will post when it comes in.

Atta boy!! I've been saying that for over a year. Everytime I get online, I end up with something else in my mailbox. I should make this my new year resolution.

Good choice. All this talk about the Browning, I've got to take mine out and do some chopping. :D

For the money, I'd go in this order:

Ranger RD9 for around $100
15'' AK Khuk for around $125
Or a Dog Father From Scrap Yard for around $180

You can't go wrong with any of them..

This was a good thread, because I am also looking for a good chopper under 200.00
I like the Ranger RD-9 where can I get one? I am sorry if someone posted where and I missed it.
Also is the Browning made in America? At this store it says Taiwan, could just be the sheath they're talking about, can anyone clear this up for me?
