After reading a gazillion knife threads here, and elsewhere, I have come to know what I really need for my very specefic use.

I need a primary "back up" SD knife. I am not going to be cutting up game and/or tree branches.....ect.

1. Fixed blade!

2. Total overall length 7"!

3. Both handle and blade must be black!

4. Sheath (top quality only) to firmly fit a belt of 2 1/4"****important!!

5. Cost is not really an object here, although I would hope that something under $500.00 is possible.

6. I would go the custom route if that is what it takes.

7. Lastly: I would like this knife to be as unnoticable as is possible. Some knives scream out, "look at me". Others do not.....even in the open.

8. Folders are not SD knives, for my kind of work!

I would very much appreciate any and all suggestions.

Remember....I am willing to pay for this knife.

I'd recommend the Dozier Arkansas Toothpick or a NY special. The Toothpick can often be found without the bullseye if you don't like it.

I just noticed you want a black blade, so I guess these are out if that's a deal breaker.

Got a couple of choices for you:

From Tops Knives:

Ute01
Ute02
BTK (Bird and Trout Knife)
Sneaky Pete Mini
CQT 6.5
Cockpit Commander

I owned the Ute01, fantastic knife. It just felt right in the hand. Ended up giving it to my (then) girlfriend. However the handle was a dark grey. The sheath was a clip so it could fit on any belt.

All these fit in your under 7" oal restriction.
If you are willing to extend that by another 1/2" or so I have a few others.

The smaller versions of Bud Nealy Aikuchi, Kinzhal and Pesh Kabz. You can't do much better than him for a defensive knife. Just ask for the blades blackened or get them DLC coated yourself.

Swamp Rat Rat Tail. Sharpened and hand wrapped by Wally Hayes and has a great steel. Beautiful blade, highly recommended, this is my current EDC blade. You will need to get an aftermarket sheath though.

With how much you are willing to pay however you may just want to get it and the sheath custom made.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

TKC: Yes Strider. Maybe the SA or the SLCC in black.

tim: Benchmade Nimvarus 145 looks prefect.

Veritas: Busse also could be the way to go. I'm not wild about the Busse handles but everything else fits my description.

VNick: A couple of my friends actually carry the TDI, but I can't seem to get past the thought that this is a $27.00 toy. For some weird reason I can't see this as a SD knife unless used across someone's face.

Trident makes a custom TCM02 knife that I have never seen mentioned at this site. But I probably haven't looked hard enough.

I would also prefer that this knife I order NIB, comes delivered "scary sharp"....as is the term I've seen used here a lot.

I don't care if it holds an edge.....as I will only be using this knife seldom....if ever.

Please keep giving me some more suggestions.

So far what you have here would do just fine.

Much thanks, Guys!

Dan

For custom knives consdier Polkowski and Perrin and as mentioned above Bud Nealy, all these folks make fantasic sd blades in a variety of styles. The SRK rattail is my edc knife though due to handle design it would not be my first choice for a pure sd knife. If you are not hard pressed for time then the custom route may be the way to go, you could have exactly what you want and it should still cost you well under 500 bones including custom kydex or leather., though I assume for this type of knife you would want kydex. Mr. Nealy has a section of available knives on his site and some of those would probably meet your needs. His sheath system is very practical though you might want to consider a custom sheath for belt carry.

As you see there are some great fixed blades available. Chris Reeve makes a one piece but expensive.

One that hasn't been mentioned that is very popular with outdoor hunting/camping folks that actually "use" their knives are the Bark River Knives.

http://www.barkriverknives.com/

The folks at Bark River use a special heat treatment on A2 steel to get a combination of good hardness and toughness. They hand-grind a "convex edge" that frankly scares me. I have lots of knives and this one I treat like a Cobra snake. I would never buy one of their knives without a blade guard as I like my fingers attached to my hand. You can always dark blue the blade to make it less conspicous and the fact that it is a hunting knife doesn't make it stand out like some of the freaky blades I have seen with all sorts of claws, hooks, saw tooth edges, etc.

A knife that doesn't hold an edge will never be really sharp in my experience. Time will cause any blade to dull. The better knives just take a lot longer to reach that point and are quickly brought back to a very sharp edge.

The Bark River folks are good people to work with and I think they will get you what you want and work to make sure you are happy with the knife. You might want to take a peak at their stuff.

Knife for a self defense? I don't think it's good idea (espacially with 7" long knife)
Knife fights are pretty ugly and in most cases both sides get wounded

I would suggest something like this: http://gunblast.com/KelTec_P3AT.htm
and small cute folder if you will find yourself in a need to cut situation

I am sure that ALAMEDA has the gun thing pretty well situated. He wants a fixed blade.....

huugh

Thanks, but just to clear this up a bit:

For me a SD knife is not to be used in a "knife fight". I am not and never will be a knifefighter.

If I ever need to use a knife for SD it will be under the following conditions.

1. My assailant will be within inches of me, and much more likely will have his hands already on me.

2. If someone drew a knife on me, and s/he was not on top of me at the time, I would never bring out a knife to stop this individual. I am not a knifefighter and I'd get dismissed from my job before the sunset, anyway.

3. My only need for a knife (SD) will be when my only recourse gives me maybe two seconds to ACT. Therefore the fixed blade is the only choice.

4. The duration of this life struggle (not a knife fight) should all happen and last maybe for ten to fifteen seconds, and that is way to long anyway. If it goes any longer than that, then I will not be in good shape when it's over.

I need to access a smallish fixed blade and do so (most probably) with my weak hand.

And again we are not even thinking folders, here. Those are for the movie knife fights.

Anyway......back to thanking all of you for some right on target picks.

TKC

I think you're right, my friend!

Strider does have just what I need!

Thanks again to all you knife folk!

Regards,

Dan

And thank you Dan, and all of your compatriots, who make up the 'thin blue line" that keeps the a**hole and crazies away from the rest of us.

Merry Christmas !

Try the Ontario RAT-3. That's what I'm ordering to put on my duty belt. Maybe the TAK-1. The RAT3 comes with a better sheath, though. The RAT is about .8" longer than what you were looking for, though. Can be had for less than $100.
