I need a fixed blade/to $500.00

I was wondering if you had chosen a knife. Have you picked something? Or narrowed it down to a few? Just curious.

I'm probably going to end up choosing a knife that will not be the perfect fit.

Here is why.

I am a very visually oriented kind of guy. Every inanimate object I've ever owned, I've always loved the way they look. Now this is not always the way to go.

A functional tool that works perfectly (even if not pretty) is preferable, to an object of beauty, that either does not work as well, or does not last as long.

Having said that......I just cannot (and never have been able to) bring myself to choose function over beauty.

And it's too damn late in life for me to change!

So.......

The Strider SA.

The Clinch Pick. (Shivworks) : but nobody can find one of these things at any price anyway....... so that's a moot point.

I love the looks of a knife called the Trident Tcm2 (I think that's the name of it).

And I love above all the looks of all Airkat knives! But I am not a jungle ninja, and I wouldn't get two feet out of my house with one of those things. But to me they are the art form of all knives. End of story!

But you also gotta remember something, here. I'm not a knife guy! I'm a cop.

I know zero from knives.

I'll probably buy the Strider SA......and live to regret it!

But, Hey! I'll love lookin' at it!

And life is short.

How did I end up in my search for a (very) specific fixed blade?

Since asking you guys back in 12/05?

After reading all of your great suggestions and looking at a gazillion more BF posts....here is the way I finally went.

Someone, (I still can't find who), posted a photo of an RJ Martin Manta Ray fixed blade. That knife looked very close to the way I wanted to carry.

But not exactly!

What to do?

Call RJ Martin on the phone! And ask him if he could build me a knife....from scratch.

He said sure. And it may be available he also said, "by the end of the year".

I figured he meant this year, around 11/06 or so. Also I remembered reading here at BF that a custom made knife from a knife builder can take anywhere, "from six months to fifteen years"! Somebody really said that here.

Whatever! Yesterday I received by FEDEX an RJ Martin custom made fixed blade knife! Built to my very own specifications..... in S30V 3" (only/squirt) blade.

The sheath is also custom made to fit! And perfectly fit!!!

As a cop I do want this blade to be able to be removed from that sheath without a very big to do.

Is it sharp? It's illegal. I don't want to find out.

RJ Martin built something I just dreamed up.

Thanks for all your great suggestions, knifenuts.

Hey Dan,

Good to hear from you again and the follow up on an old thread. Very professional and polite thing to do.

Keep safe and hopefully you'll never need to use the thing.

Dan: Glad that little project worked out so well. I employed a new twist to my sharpening technique that seems to get the edge even sharper than before, which makes me very happy!

Stay Sharp,

RJ Martin

RJ

If "sharp" is beautiful (and to members here: it seems to be the ultimate goal) then you have indeed gone where no man has gone before.

Much appreciated, RJ.

Tim

Always a pleasure.
