I need a fixed blade/to $500.00

Merry Christmas to you Tim, and everyone else at BladeForums!

We'll stay in touch. I'll have plenty more questions.

I drove everybody crazy at the academy with questions. In fact at graduation I even received a plaque for asking, "Every Question Known to Mankind".

All in good fun it was......at least I hope it was. I was never sure of that.

Till next year.

Dan

I don't know how you plan to carry this knife, BUT if you get a knife from Bud Nealy you'll get LOTS of carry options. His MCS, Multi Carry System, has set THE standard for tactical carry. He includes a couple different clips, and...
just check out his website.
I have to recommend against Strider knives on this one, just because of their sheath, and I wouldn't think that the cord wrap is very condusive to for a kydex sheath, especially if you every have to rewrap it.

ALAMEDA: You are welcome!! I am glad that I could help!

"I drove everybody crazy at the academy with questions."

I would probably be the same way!! I hope I get to be an LEO!! (before I get too damn old!)

The Busse Heavy Duty might just be short enough, and the Busse Company Store is supposed to be getting more HDs in the near future.

David Brown and Dwayne Puckett are both making high ride sheaths for mine (depending on the job I like to be able to swap between kydex and leather), and you could easily get a purpose built sheath for the knife.

The HDs are going for $167.00, or somewhere near to that mark.

Walking Man

I'm back here on this: only because a very, very good point was made by yourself, Walking Man.

Yes! The cord handle wrap on the Strider is indeed (in my uneducated opinion) a totally cosmetic application, and not in the least bit useful!

This is what is so damn frustrating about getting what you want from a knife maker!

The Strider blade.....and size...and construction ,fits the bill completely...as does many other components of this knife maker!

There is (and always will be) one aspect of any knife that lacks reason!

I am not a "knife nut"!

Most members here just keep on buying and stacking up countless numbers of blades.

At some point I will realize that I have had my time here at BF....and move on.

I'm not a knife guy!

I just want a simple answer to an (it appears) impossible question.

Actually if there were final answers to these knife questions, there would be no need for BladeForum in the first place!

How about a pocket fixed blade from Graham Brothers? Not sure if they can do a black blade...not sure why you need black for your purposes anyhow...

They have some very cool little blades.

Oh yeah, Trace Rinaldi has some great looking blades to. Would love one of those!

A couple of other Busse's that may fit the bill for SD AND 7" OAL limit.

Urban Defender ~3 1/2" blade. Traditional Tanto style. Very pointy, very sharp. Micarta grips.

Killer Bee ~4" Blade Designed as a fighter Had a factory wrapped handle.

Naked 4" PBF (Pure Bred Fighter) Same as the KB, found in a renovation of the shop long after the wrapping machine was gone. Naked handle. Very flat, very discrete, very pointy and sharp. I think this would work quite well, being very out of the way until needed. Easier to find and cheaper than the wrapped version.

For SD, i guess a custom from Fred perrin will be a very good choice...I've a custom Street Bowie from him that is simply amazing and beautifull...Plus you've got a blade with a "soul" in it ...;-)

You do know you can contact just about custom maker and have them make EXACTLY what you want instead of getting frustrated. Although there is probably something else out there that is similar to what you're looking for.
Take a look at these websites: REALLY:

I have to continue to recommend Bud Nealy for his amazing carry system. You're not going to wear the same clothes or even the same types of clothes all the time (ie jeans vs slacks vs shorts, t-shirt vs sweater vs button-down) so you'll be able to carry the knife where ever you go because you can change carry configuration very easily with his sheaths. Take a REAL good look at the page, and if you decide on one, you won't go wrong.

Since you are talking about last ditch defensive with a fairly short OAL, what about push knives / push daggers, custom made to your specs?

For $500, you can get a basic small fixed from most knifemakers (provided you don't request expensive materials). Take a long look around, and make a good decision, this knife is going to be with you a long time. Also, make sure whoever you decided to go with has a good reputation for keeping their word, AND DON'T FORGET TO ASK ABOUT TIME! It can take anywhere from about 2 months to 15 years for a knife to get made for you.
Also, make sure you get a stainless steel knife since you don't have worry about edge holding too much.

The Benchmade 145 sounds perfect for this. If it is too small then the 140. Either one is less than $150 and you could have it in a few days. I hear some people don't like the sheath but it wouldn't cost much to have a custom made. Use the money you saved for training or retirement fund.

I really think you owe it to yourself to check out the shadow III by Chris Reeve. The whole knife is made out of one piece of A-2 tool steel, is black, and has a very strong tip design. It would make a great carry knife for SD, and last you a lifetime. It has an overall length of 8", with a 4" blade, and is scary sharp.

Good Luck.

Cold Steel 7" Peace Keeper or smaller Kobun. Aim for the eyes & throat.
An extra Push-dagger for left hand carry too.
Your boots are your strongest defense.

Lots of good suggestions...
I second the BM Nimravus.
I also second the CS Peacekeeper.
For the price of each you could have a custom sheath made for either one and still come in way under budget.

I would also like to add these two...

John Greco Whisper (or Baby Whisper). He makes them all black.
Sheath is a leather pouch but again, you could get the knife and a custom sheath and still come in way under budget.

I would also recommend the Columbia River Polkowski / Kasper Fixed Blade Companion. They can be found for around $30. The sheath is not too bad but the custom option is always available. They aren't available in black but you could always take off ths scales, tape up the edge and paint the blade black. Wear on the coating should not be an issue since you will seldom be using it. You could get 15 of these and still be under budget. For the money these can't be beat.

Also, the CRKT Corkum First Strikes are now available in smaller models in all black.

Personally, I would go with the Greco...

Peace-
Cam

I would recommend against the Greco since it's a high carbon steel. For a knife that you're not going to use, you'd be better off getting stainless steel, or even stellite or titanium, and you KNOW those won't rust.

The above gives me an excuse to ask another question I've been wondering about regarding sheaths.

Can you buy (have custom made) a sheath from a company that did not make the knife?

Lets say (for the sake of choosing a knife) I buy the Strider SA. Now lets' say I get this knife and the sheath that goes with it from Strider.

Now, either the sheath does not properly fit my duty belt (2 1/4" x 1 1/4") or I just don't like it! Can I call another knife maker and tell them what knife I have and then pay them to make a sheath to fit this Strider SA.....which they didn't sell me in the first place?

I've been wondering about this and probably a dozen other things as well.

I should probably have started a new thread on this one but let's see what happens here, first.

1) Absolutely

Lets say (for the sake of choosing a knife) I buy the Strider SA. Now lets' say I get this knife and the sheath that goes with it from Strider.

2) Not necessary, but you probably could, instead I'd recommend calling a sheathmaker.
BUT you might have to send them the knife so they can get an exact fit, but there is a chance they already that model of knife, and sheaths ready to go.
