I need a hard-use knife

thumbs up on the Becker BK7, has an exposed tang and I have hammered on mine, the handle is excellent except for being overly smooth I know of several mods for that and the knife is made in USA, the flat grind makes it a perfect batoner, supposedly has a good heat-treat and is reasonably priced, you may want to go wth this one until you get more aquainted with the upper echelon knives, at which point you can make a commitment. Me, I ended up with a toolbox full of knives I tried out, time and again finding something which better suited my needs, then I found bladeforums.

The NMSFNO is a beefier sized version of the SFNO with an 8 inch blade, convex grind to a V-edge (CG version) or convexed zero edge (LE version). Great for chopping!

Wow... I have no pix of one on hand. Guess I need to photo mine! Basically it is one inch longer than the regular sized SFNO above and has the same profile, with the Nuclear Meltdown treatment (rounded corners, ball bearing finish as seen on the SAR4, also above). Its length is comparable to the Fusion Steel Heart, which is the knife right above the Skinny ASH in the first pic.)

Here you go

I'll use it mostly for camping but I would also like to take an adventure course or two.

If you do take an adventure course or two, you'll likely be provided a $12.00 Mora knife that you will learn to do everything that a person will need to do in order to survive in the outdoors.

It is fun to whack things with big knives, I have many of them myself, from production to full customs, but pretty much all of what I need to do in the field is done with a 4" blade -5" max if I want a "bigger" knife. It will be your knowledge, not the knife, that will save you in the outdoors.

Thanks for all the input. I've narrowed it to two: The Ontario RAT-7 and Rat Cutlery RC-6. Same steel and blade thickness is almost identical. According to their respective websites the RAT-7 is only 1/4" longer yet has a cutting edge 3/4" longer than the RC-6.

However, the RC-6 has a great warranty that's clearly stated. I couldn't find anything on the Ontario website.

6 to one; half dozen to the other? Or does one have an advantage?

Rat Cutlery is superior to ontario.

Forget digging with the knife. Its good in war or lifesaving nesisarity, but why on earth digg with a tool as a knife, Use a flat stone or a stick, whatever but spear your knife if its not the last days on earth.

Bosse

If You can Afford it , GO Busse, Check out the COMBAT GRADE FUSION BATTLE MISTRESS (CGFBM) OR FUSHION STEEL HEART (FSH OR A HHFSH)
You can't go wrong with Busse !!! customer service and warranty our second to none, you will never need to buy another knife! The only Problem is you will Want almost every other Busse out there !!!:D

Post pics of your adventures!!

I will throw my vote for Scrapyard knives. I have two Dumpster Mutts and they are the hardest use knives I own. Very, very tough and I would never trade mine. Good warranty as well but I doubt you'd ever need it unless you baton through a tank.

RC6 hands down. The RAT cutlery knives are produced with a far superior heat treat than the ontario produced knives. Then the wartranty comes into play....best in the industry, can't be beat.

For general outdoor use backpacking and hiking etc. you would be just as well served woith the RC4.

you do need to put Becker on your list. The BK2 and BK7 are easily worth double the price you will pay.

I also am a big fan of Rat Cutley.

I think that the kabar heavy bowie is a very good knife for the price. It is a large knife though (9in blade). I have used my for many rugged chores and it batons extremely well. Once I accidentally hit the concrete and there was only a small nick. But other than that the knife is just as sharp as when I bought it. I found mine for $45 on amazon.

My vote would go to Bark River or to RAT Cutlery. I would put my Fox river up against just about any knife for performance vs durability. Keep an eye out for Bark Rivers on the exchange, they come up all the time and some good deals are to be made.

I have had issues with my F1 chipping. If salt water is a concern then I would lean towards one, otherwise stay with Carbon.

I love my Busses and would recommend one based on durability any day. But I don't see it as a superb performer as a cutter without some serious edge work.

My opinion is to save the 2-3 hundred dollars saved buying a Busse and buy other quality gear or save to attend some quality training.
