If you know specifically what you want and are willing to shop the site for weeks, then deals can be found.
I bought two different 2hp DC TEFC permanent magnet motors, 180volts on ebay. One was $160 and the other was $120, both made by Baldor. One is driving my grinder, while the second is waiting for me to regear my bandsaw into a variable speed metal/wood saw.
I hope you didn't pay too much.
