I need a TOUGH knife

The ZT lineup is bullet proof but they can put a hole in your wallet.

The ESEE Izula 2 is my favorite knife. Its a tank. Its a fixed blade so if you want a folder look into the Ontario RAT 1 folder. Both are great. The Buck 110 is great, though my dad snapped the tip off of his prying something open. But if you use it as a knife and not a mini crowbar you should be fine. A Scrapivore is similar to the ESEE Izula, but it has a mini prybar pomel. All are good knives.

For a tough knife, I'd recommend any of the ZT 030x series.....:D

The toughest knife I know of is the Cold Steel brand of knives. The biggest, toughest knife is, of course, the Rajah 1. The Spartan comes next, followed by the excellent Voyager series. If you get him another Buck 110 (which I'm not personally fond of), I'd recommend the Cabela's Alaskan. It's just like the standard 110, but it has an S30 blade and a nice black coating that reminds me of old fashioned bluing on Smith & Wesson and Colt handguns.

Cold Steel always has made the toughest knives. Oh, and I like the CRKT M21-04s.

.

These big CRKT folders seem like tough folders to me.

get a ZT 200. it comes at just over $100, its basically a fixed blade tough knife... except it folds and fits in your pocket. and it come with the best customer support in the industry.

Hey guys',
First off Thanks!!!! I really appreciate you guys' giving me so many recommendations. I love every single one any of you came up with!!

Now, I do agree with some of you guy's that a fixed blade would be tougher, but I just want to get him something that he can take everywhere with him. And he's just not going to take a fixed blade everywhere as much as a folder, just how he is!! So later gifts I get him will definitely be the BK-11 or the BK-2, so much thanks for those recommendations!!

But as of right now, I'm debating on.... CS Recon-1, CS Rajah 3, or the Rat-1 from Ontario. So now I need help picking between those three!! :grumpy:
But I'm afraid that I don't really know anything about the Rat-1!! So if you think I should get this one, WHY?!!

Thanks again guys'

XL Voyager clip point is what he needs
+1 I second this. I beat the crap out of my XL Voyager, it's huge, it has never failed me or even taken a dent really. It sharpens easily, stays sharp forever, rides super low in the pocket thanks to the clip placement. Also one of the smoothest one-handed opening knives I've ever owned. Snap your wrist and it just slides out with that heavy click. One of the best buys I've ever made. Great price too.

The Recon1 is a tad more expensive than the Rajah 3 and doesn't deploy as quick but has a longer blade.
It all depends on application.
eg: If I was in the woods for me, the Recon 1 would be more comfortable as a baton knife but the rajah 3 would be more comfortable at preparing food due to it's kukri design

The rat 1 is good value for money but way weaker than the CS knives

I would get a ZT 0200 or a 0350 blem from kershaw guy. The 350 is about perfect, tough as nails, and has great s30v blade steel to boot. Cold Steel's are good knives, but the 2 Zero Tolerance knives I listed are amazing. Oh yeah, they are also made in the US, and these knives are something to be proud of. The 0200 is a beast and the 350 is a bit smaller, but still a very heavy duty knife.

I was going to suggest the BM Adamas at ~$125, or ZT0200 @ ~$140, a blem from Kershawguy would be less, and just as good since it is probably a cosmetic flaw.

But of the 3 you mentioned, and I haven't had any one of these, I have read more about the Recon 1, and believe it to be more practical overall.

Of the 3 you mention, Rat-1. I have had terrible luck with CS but the Rat-1 I bought is quite a knife for the $28 I paid for it. If I might make an alternate suggestion, Kershaw Junkyard Dog 2. It comes in a standard 14C28N or a composite blade model. I have the composite and it is a beast. One of my favorite knives. Heavy duty, rock solid and I like flippers. The standard can be had +/-$50. Worth a look for sure.

I think a CS Large Voyager or Recon 1 are good choices and only $38-60...you could get him both of them for less than some of the other options without sacrificing any of what you are looking for to begin with.

You know....you can look at the Spyderco Endura as well. A large knife, thin, and I have seen some of the old ones, one guy used his to cut C4 etc, I remember the pic, but cant find it on the forum now. I bought one second hand, a user, still locks up great and it has a thick blade when choosing the saber grind.

Only thing I saw was "bigg-ER" and "Crocodile Dundee." I'm surprised nobody has suggested a CS Espada XL yet. I mean, if you CAN EDC a knife that big...
