My brother is turning 60 this July and I was thinking of getting him a really nice EDC knife as a gift. He is a police officer that loves the outdoors, camping, and hiking. Does anyone have any ideas
as to what would be a good folding knife? My price range is between $100.00 to $150.00.

As always, many thanks for all the help.

There are GREAT DEALS on the exchange.

Your 100 will go further if you don't mind used ( lots are like new with box)

If you buy new I'd look for spyderco or Mabey Kershaw

Not knowing what his tastes are isn't helping ;)

We need specifics other than prices

Since his age does he like an old timey slip joint?

We need blade sizes to help you :)

Benchmade 550 G10
Spyderco PM2

I agree that it would help to know what he likes in a knife...

Two folders come to mind, and both are at the bottom of your price range. Spyderco Manix 2 and Benchmade Griptilian. The Griptilian goes for around $100, unless you go for the version with the CPM 20 CV blade, then you will be out around $170. I believe the Manix 2 goes for $110.

I was going to suggest the Manix 2 as well. $100 for the S30V blade version on most websites. It's a very very tough SOB, with a very versatile blade shape that would be really useful to a cop, outdoorsman, or pretty much anything. I have the Manix 2 S110v G10 in my pocket as I type this. It will cost around $140 but you bump up to S110v steel, and also get skeletonize liners so it's lighter than the standard Manix 2, but without sacrificing strength. I'd bet it would make more sense for someone who's already carrying around a bunch of heavy gear.
I also have a BM Griptillian, and love it. It's been a loyal companion for about 10 years already.
The only gripe I have with the grip, is actually in its head-to-head comparison with the Manix. Think about it for a sec. Both cost right at $100 give or take a couple bucks. They have comparable locks as well. Fit/finish is comparable.

The Grip comes with 154cm and FRN scales.
The Manix comes with S30v and G10.

So for the same money, and all else being equal, it seems like better materials bump the Manix 2 into the "better bang for the buck" category.

That said, the Axis lock is easier to operate with just the thumb so you won't have to change grip position. That may be a big enough advantage for a police officer that it may give the Grip an edge.
Either way you can't go wrong.

Also check out the Spyderco Paramilitary 2. another very well respected classic.

There are honestly just a ton of options in that price range. A few to consider are the Buck 830 Marksman, H&K 14715, Spyderco Manix 2, Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter, and a number of Kizer knives if you think he may prefer the ti framelock game.

brousblades makes a cool looking folding knife for a little over a hundred. He is a custom knife maker, so no one else will have one.

This is hard.

Picking a knife is more personal than shoes. Chances that you'll pick a knife he loves is slim.

I recommend either having him pick a knife himself or picking a knife that has some meaning to you personally. The former has a chance of being used and the latter kept as a keepsake.

I think that since he likes the outdoors you might want to get him a Ritter Griptilian from Knifeworks.com. They come in orange or black.
Another thought is that Buck has a custom shop and you could get him a custom 110 or 112 with S30V and Elk, Buffalo horn, or Ram horn scales (or G10).

I think a custom 110 or 112 would be a great "keepsake" type gift, regardless of whether it gets used.

This is really hard without knowing more about your brother, but there are some excellent options available. Two folders that will be able to handle what you've mentioned and still be easily "pocketable" for most people are the full-sized BM Ritter Grip, and one of ZT's 566 variants. Both can be found new within your price range.

There are many other choices, but we'd need to know more about your brother... like whether he even cares about knives, whether he carries something now and what it is, what he might be likely to want it for (hiking and camping I get, but not everyone who hikes and camps carries a knife)... More info could generate better suggestions.

Without details and specifics of type, style, size, action, etc. (which would still only narrow it down to thousands), any suggestions would simply be as random as blindly opening a catalog and buying the first knife your finger lands on. ;)

So.... How about a gift card from a knife dealer? It may be fun for him to go online and pick something to his specific taste. Maybe he finds his grail knife and throws in a couple extra bucks to get it. At least it would be less likely to end up in his sock drawer.

Thanks Teppojutsu. Your right. I should have given more info. Actually, I was thinking of something that he would be able to pass along to one of his sons or grandsons. As far as blade length, probably no bigger than 5 inches and if this helps, he is the kind of guy that doesn't like anything fancy. He likes things that are made well and without flash. You hit the nail on the head cuz he is an old timey kind of guy. Thanks again.

You guys have given me a lot of great advice. Thank you all for your time and knowledge. You've given me a lot to think about.

Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter would be an excellent option, as would a Spyderco Paramilitary 2.
