I Need Advice On A EDC For My Brother

Our shop is a block away from our local police department. The 2 knives they almost always buy for themselves are the ZT0350 and the Benchmade Griptillian. Both are in your price range. Don't know if that helps or not but thought I would let you know.

I have one that wont even cost you $100 - its a beauty and its a workhorse. Cold Steel Code 4 :D

My brother is turning 60 this July and I was thinking of getting him a really nice EDC knife as a gift. He is a police officer that loves the outdoors, camping, and hiking. Does anyone have any ideas
as to what would be a good folding knife? My price range is between $100.00 to $150.00.

As always, many thanks for all the help.

Now that is probably the best information possible for this thread.

Every time I have given a Griptilian or Mini Grip as a gift, it has been well-received. My personal favorite in that price range is the BM 585 Mini Barrage.

Cold steel knives come to mind. Their cts-xhp is a good steel and there a a few models that would suit your brother perfectly, all in your price range. Recon 1 folder, lawman, code 4 just to name a few.

I think a custom 110 or 112 would be a great "keepsake" type gift, regardless of whether it gets used.

I was thinking the same thing; not just because the 110 (and the 112 also, but to a lesser extent) was THE Folding Hunter before folding hunters were cool. The other reason i suggest this, especially a custom - as a keepsake, is because there are just so many good if not great options in your price range. These days $100 - $150 will get you a lot of performance and functionality in an EDC folder ... heck, it can even get you too of you're not a steel snob of fussy about fancy. Also, EDC folders are such a personal choice based upon many factors: intended use, style/aesthetics, ergonomics, intended uses and weight. The type of pants one typically wears will affect size and weight considerations; there are just so many variables and so many choices that a custom keepsake will be a good choice and a Buck Custom Shop 110 would be a welcomed gift.

I know I would want one!

Based on your initial description, I'd say get him a PM2 - already mentioned, and it's Spyderco's most popular model for good reason:

However, if you said he might be interested in a more traditional style knife, or a fixed blade, or etc., etc., then I would have several other recommendations.

If you think he might prefer the ZT design better (some folks just don't like the looks of the Spydies), I'd recommend the ZT 0770 (aluminum handle) for about $120 new, or the same knife in carbon fiber for a few bucks more (about $180 new, although both models come up on the Forum Exchange now and again):

Asking for advice in a very general way will get many suggestions, some of them very good, but even those will be a mere drop in the bucket compared to the number of choices there really are.

My suggestion is this: go to any one of the reputable dealers out there (ones that happen to be members here are great places to start) and do a search. They almost all have customizable search options where you can narrow down the choices by cost, size, style, brand, etc. and as you look make a list of the half-dozen or so that appeal to you the most. It doesn't take long and I would be surprised if you weren't surprised at how many really great knives are out there that you never even knew about. You would likely find it fun, not a chore.

Then come back here and either search existing threads about each of them (best) or start a thread asking about those six. You'll still get the same comments and opinions from members here but they will be focused on a select group that you already like. Of course you'll still also get suggestions about knives not on your list, but the good news is they should be a lot closer to what you're looking for. I think this has the best chance of you and your brother getting something you and he will really like.

ANY COLD STEEL KNIFE. THEY HAVE A NEW STEEL , CTS , THAT IS AWESOME. IT STAYS SHARPER LONGER THAN MOST OTHER STEEL S. COLD STEEL KNIFE S ARE KNOWN FOR THE ABILITY TO CUT AND STAY SHARP.

I would chose Benchmade over Spyderco. It's harder to get Spyderco to warranty what they sell. I work part time in a small knife shop and have had Spyderco refuse repair on some customers knives. Never had a problem with Benchmade.

Spyderco PM2, spyderco endura, spyderco delica, spyderco mantra 1 or 2, spyderco sage series.

Also spyderco doesn't appeal to as many with that big ugly hole. My delica is ugly but feels good. I dunno about your brother but he may care about looks more than I

Good choices. And then deassist the 0350!

As far as blade length, probably no bigger than 5 inches and if this helps, he is the kind of guy that doesn't like anything fancy. He likes things that are made well and without flash.

We could probably name 50 different knife models that would meet your criteria.

5" blade in a folding knife is a very big knife, and not even legal in a lot of places. If he doesn't mind a big knife then there are lots to choose from- Spyderco Military, Spyderco Manix 2 XL, Benchmade 710, Benchmade 908.

I am not too far in age from your brother and my favorites are mostly Spyderco, some Benchmades. There are some interesting new ZT models that I haven't fully studied. Any of these 3 brands would be safe to choose from. The Spyderco Military, Manix 2, Manix 2 XL and Paramilitary 2 are favorites of mine as well as very popular with other people. In Benchmade I like the 581 Barrage and 908 Stryker. A lot of people like the 710 and the full size griptilian.
