I need an affordable freehand sharpening solution.

I found one on sale for $22 from a local store, great little stone (similar to an edge pro stone in size) it does load up but maintenance is easy with a pencil eraser or ajax and water.
 
Given any thought to a spyderco double stuff stone (medium and fine grit)

Same ceramics as in the Sharpmaker's rods, if familiar with that system. As with most ceramics, they're better-suited for light maintenance & touch-ups, instead of major grinding/re-bevelling tasks. These aren't aggressive enough for those jobs. So long as one takes care not to let a good edge degrade too much or get too damaged, the DoubleStuff hone is a handy maintenance tool.
