I need golf help

My 3 12 yr. old boys were watching the game at the boys and girls club tonight. I reall watched no basketball all year, but even though I am a CA native, I rooted for Boston. It goes back to Larry Bird. I drove to pick them up and still 4 min. left. I watched it with 20 pimply teens and a strange odor in the room.

The first thing she said is I still swing like I am trying to hit softball.:o

That was my problem. I'd get everything lined up, start my backswing, and bring my front foot back so I could step into the swing.

Is it any wonder my 300 yard drives only goes 30 yrds ahead and 270 yards off to the left???

It is sooooo hard not to lift up my front foot.
Darn Cetlics.:mad: This Celtics line up is not very likable anyway. A bunch of whiners. But I guess you love the uniform not the player.

x^2 = 270^2 + 30^2
x = (73800)^0.5
x = 271.66 yard drive

Your drive angle is approximately 83.66 degrees off center to the left. I would suggest you aim 83.66 degrees to the right (like aim for the ball washer) and perform your normal swing. Problem solved.

BA, I don't know what to tell you. Just go out there, try to hit the ball, learn to swear and drink. Tell your friends and neighbors you shot a 82 when you get home.

I went back to the range with my "new" clubs. I took the driver and pitching wedge. I could not hit a barn today. When I get a chance I will get some lessons. I am planting my left foot but now(again sooo hard for me) I believe I am over thinking. Thank goodness the range is 5 mins. from where I am staying and cheap for a small bucket. When I played softball in college I hit third. But I will admit I could not hit with the fungo bat at practice. Golf is frustrating but fun.

If you're determined to go it alone, start learning the game from the hole outward.

Spend your time on the putting green, then practice chipping. You keep the majority of your weight on your left side for both of these clubs.

The try the wedge at the range, probably should get about 75 yards out of it. Again, try and keep the majority of your weight on your left side.

Move up to the longer clubs as you become proficient with the shorter ones. Learn the 5 wood, then 3 then D. Piece of cake.

Ben Hogan's Five Lessons, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons, Ben Hogan's Five Lessons. I thought you were a college grad. Can you learn from a book. Used for as little as $1.86 from Amazon. STOP going to the range until you know what you're doing. You will create bad habits and incorrect muscle memory. This is sure to make the game more frustrating and less fun.

Ya I am a stubborn one. My parents sent me to basketball camp, tennis lessons, and even lessons on how to throw a javelin. Not to long ago I took fencing lesions. I do not know why I am resistant to golf lessons.

After you buy Mr Hogan's book, go to the golf shop and buy a bunch of the wiffle balls. Then find a nice quiet place with around 30 yards open space and take your 6 iron and hit wiffle balls. It's great free practice, you can really train your muscles this way.

Good advice if you're gonna remain lesson leery. The yellow foam balls are pretty good too. Stay on the driving range for a while and build your confidence at ball striking. Putt, chip, and do some bunker work while you're at it. Practice, practice, practice. If there's a decent executive or par three course you might start playing there. Rethink the lesson thing before bad habits become ingrained and make sure you're not standing too close to the ball after you hit it. :D

Esav has it right. Take a lesson first. Even a hard headed idiot like me learned a lot from lessons.
As for the blisters, a glove will help a lot, I don't use one but most people do. You are probably gripping too tight. Most people do. Grip the club as tightly as you would hold a bird. Not tight enough to hurt it but tight enough that it won't fly away.

Ben Hogan's book is "The Five Fundamentals".

Yep... One of the big contributing factors to inconsistent hits could be because you are not keeping your eye on the ball as you follow through.
I'm not sure if someone already mentioned it or not, but have an experienced player check the way you grip your club too.

Just to lighten things up a bit.

^ :thumbup::thumbup: Payne was a great golfer and a great man. It really sucks that he died. :( Peter Jacobsen is pretty cool too. Now I feel like going to play today. I think I will. :)

Payne was my absolute favorite. The day he died was horrible for me.
If you ever see the cd Jake Trout and The Flounders, pick it up. It is a great listen.

I bought Ben Hogan's Five Lessons. Haven't had time to crack the spine. I did however get a free lesson form a family friend who has been golfing most his life. My grip was a bit off. But he said my swing was good. From the advice I got here I have been keeping my front foot flat. It still feels weird but keeping front foot flat and a calm swing are the things I think about when I swing(my softball swing is very diffrent). I think of this and then relax and swing. I do not try to kill the ball rather just make good contact. Keeping my eye on the ball is no problem. Also I have been mostly hitting with the 9 iron.

Thanks guys. When I make it to the LPGA I will hire you all as my entourage!:)
