Recommendation? I need to get to da chopper!

I just saw the Skrama for the first time the other day in a yt vid.

You can get the Skrama with the plastic sheath for $74ish + Kabar Choppa or BK9 $110ish and still a few $ left over for lunch. Even if you choose the leather sheath on the Skrama, the pair will run $210-215.

I have a big hand, I found the BK9 handle more comfortable then the Choppa. YMMV.

I know most will argue quality over quantity but you can get a few nice toys to play with from the above list.

I like the kukri look but have no experience with them.

I'm kinda partial to my Swamp Rat M9LE, but there's lots of suggestions in this thread that would serve you admirably.

Unfortunately, it appears that the old Browning Crowell-Barker comp knife has been discontinued. You used to be able to find one of those fo under $120.

There's a shop in the UK that still has them in stock.

Kershaw camp 10 is supposed to be a good chopper for the money.

Personally I want the Condor eco parang which is pretty cheap but that's 11 inch. They also make the mini duku parang and pack golok.

I think the ideal size is larger, like 24" overall, with an 18 blade, the extra reach & mass really is nice if you're actually chopping (...if you cut it down much more, you need to add some mass near the end to retain useful choppi-ness, like the bolo or kukri shape - which are also best in class choppers

I never carry anything that large when out in the rockies. The reason being that I like to put my large blade or hatchet inside my pack and 15-16" OAL for a blade or hatchet is the largest that will easily fit inside a pack. Anything longer than that will not fit in my pack. The chance of me needing to use a large blade or hatchet is very minimal. I have it just in case. Hicking with a huge blade on my side that is likely not to get used is just a waste. So anything larger than 17 oal, is out for me. It's different when you are clearing a path and have blade in hand, then it does not matter.

And that is exactly what the op isn't looking for. A 24" oal blade will not do what he is asking for. Read the op.

Agreed, I was trying to make the point that when you go to a shorter length - bolo or kukri shapes tend to be better choppers. I was not trying to change the mind of OP to use a longer chopper.

The kershaw camp 10 is pretty nice from that perspective, since it is rather robust.
I'd really like a version of it in 80crv2 instead of the mn65 they use : ) That part is what the skrama gets correct. Sorry I didn't mean to sound 'contrarian'

If I was to buy a dedicated "chopper" knife; more chop then my Magnum Camp (not a true chopper by any means, but just a big handy hearty knife), but still more knife then my $20 Tramontina, then the KaBar Combat Bowie or Moses, ESEE junglas, and the BRK Bravo 2 or 3 or the 1909, would probably all be at the top of my list today all things, (incl. finances), considered...

(Thanks, now I think I might need a chopper)
