I Need Your Help Fellow Forumites In Designing A New "Mega" Folder!

My grief has been that this is the only kind of mega folder available:

(a very poorly made eBay cheapie)

Your going to make a good qaulity folder this size???? That would probably cost a fortune!! If not E-mail me when you have one for sale. I will take one as a conversation piece/Intimidator!! :D

Hmmm, let try something a little differant...
Blade style/length - 5.5 inch Wharncliffe (long straight edge with a nice sharp point and a false edge on the back. 6 inches closed.
Opening mechanism - Spyderholes are my 1st choice. Low profile and is easily manipulated.
Locking mechanism - lock back with Boye "dent" so we "lefties" aren't left out:D , besides I don't trust liner locks without a LAWKS.
Handles - Micarta or stabilized wood. G10?:barf:
Make the handle with full liners and give it a single finger groove-cutout to access the opening hole/peg. No clip.
There you have it, not a pocket "axe" or "prybar" (this is a folder we're talking about, right?) but a lean mean slicing machine.

I just purchased after much deliberation my first mega-folder from our very own Michael Cooper and I think it should meet the criteria established in the first post of this thread-camp/utility/s.d.
The only thing I would have liked would have been 5/32"steel in lieu of 1/8" . Laynard hole too. I like stand offs better than spacers for cleaning.Micarta handles ok ( my personal pref) G10 prob. best
Liners - ?? Ti for sure, thickness I have no idea seem thick on this one
Blade length on this one is right on I think O/A right on. I'm going to put this one to work in the field. I'll tell you how it works after this hunting season.
The blade shape is kind of SERE2K and I've only heard good things about that knife. And the price was right on. A custom folder for a production price!

1. ATS-34, mirror polish, 5 1/2" Bowie style blade with slight
recurve.
2. 3/16" thick at maximum; double sided finger grooves for opening.
3. Brown Elk horn handle with 2 finger grooves cut into bottom
as well as angled & grooved in left side of handle toward rear;
(right hand side for lefties).
4. Possible use of 2 mosaic style pins.
5. Nickel/Silver Bolsters.
6. Thong hole on rear of handle.
7. Strong linerlock.
8. Titanium liner.
9. Leather snap close sheath.

I would like to see a really heavy mega folder. A clip point blade thats 4.5" x 1.5" x .25". SS scales about .125" thick and either a thick ss liner or lockback.

How about a huge applegate fairbain style folder?
6 1/2 inch blade, 5 inch handle, with an old style Marble's safety blade cover lock? And torsion springs interconnected with a strut to phase the opening swik swak clik?
Bwah hah hah haah. A Vallaton masterpiece! Temper the blades in the bowels of a terrorist - we have plenty in Cuba!

Seriously, the blade cover could also dovetail into the scales and transfer stress from the choil to handle. With a decreasing rate spring (a smaller torsion in opposition as it closes) the inertia problem of slowing down the massive blade could be addressed. Or make it a BIG BLACK KNIFE like the CNC Charles Ochs Seals knives.
This is better than drugs . . .

Thanks for the continuing thoughts pend and others! I too like a bowie blade but we are still contemplating on the blade shape. Here's the skinny so far. The first few will be ATS-34. I don't care what anybody says, it's a good steel and we want these first few to be affordable. Rick's expertise in heat treating makes it an even better steel. The blade will be 5/32" thick. A good compromise we think for strength and weight. Also, the first few will be liner locks. Don't be dismayed because like I stated earlier, Rick's liner locks are as strong as anyone's and it will be "beefy" sized for this knife. The release point WILL be recessed to thwart accidental unlocking during hard use. Other styles will come, (frame lock, different steels, etc.), but we want to get a few up so we can get some user feedback. Please, keep the ideas coming!

Gene, it's sounding more and more like what I first described! If so I would like to get in line for one. Have you thought any more on the handle shape? What about liners? SS or Ti? Bolsters?
I still think a long clip bowie style blade will offer the best of both worlds, utility and defense.

Let me know.

OK,

I'm waiting with baited breath (sometimes it smells that bad, at least after some sardines and mustard) for the new knives. :)

Seriously, I really do look forward to hearing about them, seeing pictures of them posed next to a ruler and of course knowing what the price will be!!!

Keep us posted!:D

Gene - thanks. Sounds like an excellent choice. I love ATS-34. 5/32" = a great thickness!

I can't emphasize enough that a simple drop point or clip point or modified wharncliffe...(???) is not going to work at this size. That's why the Vaquero Grande has its twist (which I do not like, btw - its too "fantasy"). A blade that large needs a more than a regular shape...just don't go overboard...;)

A good bowie-type blade would really create quite a stir amongst many crowds - I imagine drawing in on Busse-lovers, Khukuri-nuts, Bowie-users, hunters and collectors alike. The tactical potential of this mega-folder is not as great as the others above. It needs to have a great look, and a folding bowie will get you there.

I've been in on the design of a few knives that have actually been put into production. If you would like, (at your request), I can come up with a few drawings based on your suggestions (as well as the other bladeforums members) and post them to this thread to help guide the dialogue. It's easy to say what steel, what size, etc. but when you see the real thing - it makes all the difference in the world. Then, you can have people react to them specifically. (that is, of course, if you don't already have someone doing it...;) )

I'll have some time Mon-Wed next week. Just drop me a line

Sounds like a great idea to me, of course I'm not the one doing this so I can't answer for Gene. I also think the bowie blade in a long clip would be the ticket for such a large folder. It has to be sufficiently different in handle shape though so as not to get it confused with the Madd Maxx or to have some call it a MM wannabe. Of course I am partial here but I can't help but think the model 2 Obenauf handle, of course not line for line, would be a great match for the bowie blade.

Just deposited my NJ rebate check in the bank - let me know when this 'puppy' is being crafted! Might have to purchase 2 so I won't 'list' to one side!:D

I have a Sog Pentagon II. It's 5 inches, cheap and has amazing action. Big Bang for the buck.

I know this thread isn´t new, but I wanted to add my two cents...if I had the opportunity to get "my" mega-folder built, it´d have the following specs:

- plain recurve blade
- some high-quality low alloy steel
- fully convex ground
- 3/16th inch thick
- 4 inch long
- black coating
- very thick liner lock
- thick G-10 scales to achieve a good grip
- pretty wide blade
- no sharpened false edge
- thumb serrations on the spine
- lanyard hole

Maybe something along these lines...

but with a longer recurve blade.

Ok, I took some time this afternoon and made a composite of a few blades.

The top one is a "suggested" design.

The blade would have a nice recurve with a wood handle, lockback with a solid backspacer. I'm not married to this idea, but with input from the rest of you folks, could come up with some more imagery to help Gene.

The rest are for comparison. In order:

Cold Steel Vaquero Grande - 13 7/8" OAL
Cuda Maxx 5.5 - 12"
Buck 110 - 8 1/4"
Classic Sebenza - 8 1/2"
Spyderco Delica - 6 13/16"

Just wondering what every became of this project...

:D:D
