I only have a few knives, and I'm happy. Am I crazy?

Hey all,

I've been thinking about my "collection" lately and it's paltry compared to what a lot of your guys have. But, the thing is, I like carrying the ones that I have an awful lot. The ones that get the most pocket time are my Spyderco PM2, Spyderco Native 5 G-10, and my newly acquired Benchmade 15060-2 (Grizzly Creek). I've got a couple of Delicas, a few Bucks and a really nice Cold Steel American Lawman with some great file work done on it, but those knives just don't "do it for me" like the main three I listed. Unless something really, and I mean really grabs my attention, I'm fine with what I have. Does that make me weird?

I'm wondering how many of you guys really only carry a few different knives, like your favorite 2 or 3. Even if you have many more knives than I do, do you typically only carry your favorite 2 or 3? I've seen some pretty cool knives, but they wouldn't be too practical to carry, and if I'm buying a knife, I like to carry it. I was never much of a collector, only letting them see daylight once in a while.

Anyway, I've rambled enough. Your thoughts?

Thanks,
SA

I'm a knife slut. I can't carry one for long - no matter how much I love it - until I carry something else.

I have knife moods. Sometime I want a bigger knife. Then it starts feeling like a sword. So I go smaller for a while. Sometime I want a nicer knife that I'll never take out of my pocket. Sometimes I want a beater I can cut rocks with. Sometimes I want an Orange knife. Sometimes I want serrations.

I have about 20 Spydercos and about 20 Benchmades. Plus a Cold Steel Recon 1. I carry almost all of them at one time or another.

I usually have four or five different knives in a rotation that I carry. I'll usually work in whatever happens to be my new knife of the moment into the "starting lineup". About once a month, one or two goes back into the safe & a couple of others get some time.

No, you are not crazy. Even if you have just one knife, and it makes you happy, and that's it...there's nothing wrong with that.

Heck, I carry a Vic Classic every day. Cheap, stupid, ugly thing really does just about everything I need, and I can pick my teeth with it too.

I generally carry a locking folder and a multi tool. I only have a couple of different varieties that o carry.

My knife collection is very unimpressive.

I always keep my rotation to about 7 - 10 knives at any one time. I use and carry all of mine. I'm not a collector either.

I do get bored with them, though, so I'm pretty active on the Exchange here.

Wish I only had 'a few' knives or even 20 Spy's or 20 Benc.'s or a rotation only of 5 or so knives ~~ I can only dream.!***
327 & growing all the time + my P&R&A & Relic's.! I really think I have a problem where I just can't say "no" to sharp things or things that go bang.! ""HELP"" me.^

I have no rotation. Small 21 only. Before that it was an SOG FLASH one. Before that it was a folding box cutter. Don't see myself going back to either, so... One edc for me.

If you only have one knife and no desire for more, why are you on this forum? I'm not trying to be a smart ass or negative, just curious.

Mike

I have more than one knife - I just only EDC one. And as far as why I'm still here? I've asked that myself - even posted a thread about it. I guess I just like it here?

I have over a 100 various knives of the folding variety and dozens of fixed blades.

I only regularily carry four.

Benchmade cqc7 emerson design (old but sturdy)
Spyderco PM2 (two colors carry varies on color for the day)
Opinel #8 (because I enjoy them)
Fox 599 karambit (lovely knife)

I applaud the fact that you can stick around. I myself carry a rotation of only a few; Small 21, GEC 73, SAK Farmer, 2014 Forum Knife, a Lon Humphrey Whitetail, and a GEC 81 Stockman. I have around 25 more that I work in occassionaly but I enjoy learning about others and the community here in the forum. Some enjoy learning and dont need/want everything that catches their eye.

OP - Youre not crazy my friend.

Crazy is relative. I have 70+ folding knives and still searching for the perfect knife. I am slowly coming to the realization that the perfect knife does not exist. Searching for perfection is a human 1st world problem. It is a freaking knife. It is sharp and it gets dull. Every day I cut stuff. Does my edc knife selection determine the difference between life & death? No. Take a step back and look at the big picture.

I think the point is you are happy and thats all that matters. Buying more stuff you dont need will never make you happier, only less wealthy. You really only need one knife you love to keep you content, if you allow it.

@ the OP. You're normal, you're only weird when compared to the knife knuts on this forum. Consider yourself fortunate that you haven't caught the knife bug. As for edc, I carry a Cold Steel laredo bowie in the woods. It's my favorite knife. I do rotate extra knives in addition to that. In urban areas, I don't edc any knife.

Thanks, Mike and KBA. (sooner or later I'm sure I'll get something else.. maybe then I'll be an official 'rotater' lol)

You are probably more sane than guys like me who have 100+ knives. We buy knives to temporarily distract our brains from the train wreck between our ears. Some people do it with drugs or alcohol or golf or bass boats. We do it with knives. Its pure distraction.

The fact that you don't need to anesthetize yourself with never-ending knife purchases may mean that your train wreck is not as bad as mine. Or it could just mean that you anesthetize yourself with something else. It could be anything from having a super clean house to trying to make big bucks at work. Its different for each of us.
