Over the past couple of years the elk stag 305 has been about as rare as hens teeth for me, I think they really only did them in 1989 and I've only seen 2 pop up on Ebay.

this one just popped up and the seller wanted too much but I threw in a significantly lower offer I expected to get shot down, and they accepted.

$138 later after tax & shipping, and it looks like this beauty is mine.

No box...etc, but it's going into my pocket anyways.

Great looking pocketknife and worth every dollar. Heck, I just spent well over $138 at the grocery store and that will all be gone in a week. Your knife will last for generations. 👍

Congrats...don't you love it when a plan comes together ;)
The plan was to scratch the Buck itch I've been having the past few days, so I went to see if there were any opportunities to check another 305 off my list and there it was.
The last elk stag 305 I saw over a year ago had some very bland stag and some pocket wear on the bolsters.
I don't know if this was actually bought new by a collector who kept it under glass like the seller said, but that could explain the condition and lack of box.

A little digging turned up mention that Buck started to offer Sambar stag as their " buckhorn " handle option in 1987.
I couldn't find anything saying when they changed to elk stag though, I just assumed for some reason that Elk was always Bucks stag of choice.

I guess I'll just call this stag since there's little way to tell.

To me, your 305 looks like sambar stag. When I first saw the back side of your knife, it reminded me of my sambar stag Case pocketknife, which is 3" closed.

I googled and came up with a bunch of sites...here are the two I think have the best info on the difference...
Maybe John B. jb4570 jb4570 will refresh his photos that I saw during my search.

This was the last one I thought I'd ever be able to acquire because they tend to command such a premium.

I still wouldn't say I got much of a deal, but the red and yellow 305's have been listed for ( of course asking isn't getting ) more lately and I don't value synthetics enough to pay $150+.

I have payed more than I ever thought I would for a knife 3 times ( including this one ) , every time I hesitated at least a little, and all 3 have have been Buck 305's that I have yet to regret .
The 1990 buckbone, 1998 brown bone, and now this one.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Redbone 305 too!
