I often peruse the internet for "interesting objects", items that may eventually find themselves added into my "Interesting Objects Collection". Knives are a big part of this personal collecting hobby of mine, and so it's not a surprise that my perusing will often land me on knife vendor websites. Well, I happened to be checking out Knifecenter's site, and there on the top of their page it stated that they were running a sale on selected Boker branded products.
Okay, I'll bite... I mean, hey, maybe there will be a good deal on something I may really like 😊
Their sale only popped up seven or eight Boker products, with only the Boker Plus Apparo hollow handled survival knife catching my eye.
I don't have any hollow handled survival knives, but have considered getting one to have that genre represented within my collection. The Buckmaster survival knife was the one I have considered the most, but since they've been out of production for quite some time now, their secondary market pricing is a wee bit too high for the mint specimen that I'd be trying to obtain.
Anyhow, it's been a while since I was looking into them, but then this deal pops up at Knifecenter, and my interest in obtaining a knife of this genre gets revived. I guess the full MSRP is somewhere North of $200, but their common going rate seems to be in the $150 to $180 range.
Well... Knifecenter's blowout sale has them at $79.95! Now, I ain't no mathematician, but that's about half of what they normally go for, (I even checked other vendor's sites to price compare) 😁
After reading some reviews on their website, (and on some other websites), I decided it would be a worthy enough specimen to have in my collection.
It's produced in Asia for Boker, and that gave me some pause, but it seems that they are doing a decent job in making this 'Martin' knife design πŸ‘

Anyhow, yes... Knifecenter kind'a twisted my arm by offering this neat knife at a price that's pretty irresistible 😁

I'm guessing that Boker has discontinued this model, and they likely offered Knifecenter a blowout price on their remaining inventory of them. I have taken advantage of such deals before on Knifecenter, and it's hard to find a better deal when they do this! πŸ‘πŸ˜πŸ‘

It's 440C stainless steel blade is listed as being 7" long, so... she seems to be quite the stubby beast.

So, if someone reads this post and feels that this is a deal they would like to get in on, the Knifecenter blowout price is only good while their limited supply lasts. Once they are sold out, the deal is gone.
It isn't a knife that most folks here will likely be interested in buying, but if you are interested... go ahead and get one while the get'in is good 😁

Btw, if one wants one of these as a collectable that will represent this type of knife genre, it's likely to be quite scarce piece out there in it's total numbers.
Why do I guess that?... Well, we have been outside of the 1980's for quite some time now, so they probably sold okay for the Boker company, but probably not great in sales. These are simply not the genre of knife that's at it's prime in popularity, (and, to boot, they are not usually cheaply priced, which further dampens sales). Tie that with them actually being considered a very decently made and robust product, helps make them a decent knife for collecting them for posterity reasons 😁

I think they first came out during 2012-2013, and from what I have seen on the internet, they were commonly selling in the $100 price range.
I don't know exactly when or why they jumped up in price sometime during the past so many years, but they did, with their commonly sold for price rising to the $150 to $180 range. Why?... I have no clue. I do believe they are now a discontinued item, but don't know when that occurred.

I will do, Sir... Pics will be up as soon as I receive it πŸ‘ŒπŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

The sheaths are of leather, but it's the one negative that most online reviews had in common. It seems the knife is a big hit, where the sheath is a big miss.
I would compare that situation with Cold Steel' San Mai Trail Master, where the knife itself tends to get good reviews, but it's sheath doesn't do the knife justice.

Here is a pic I found online showing the knife, sheath, and packaging...

And in this picture that I found online, it shows the handles knurled surface that is under the wrapped cording...

I was searching online for an earlier year Boker catalog to see what the MSRP initially was, and to see what information they may have offered about this model knife.
Well, I was able to find Boker's 2013 catalog, and this is what I found...

The initial MSRP was $195.95, (in 2013), so I guess it must have risen North of a $200 MSRP as the years went on, (which I does make sense, since that original listed price was 9 years ago).

I've got this one on my "what the hell, why not?" list. Not really sure what I would do with it, but I think it looms cool, and the Plus line is pretty solid.

I hate being an enabler ( 😁 ), but, I just did a quick check to see if Knifecenter still has them in stock... Yes, they do, so the deal is still there for your taking πŸ‘Œ

Oh, btw, the 'Apparo' model name was given to this knife because it supposedly means "prepare" or "I prepare" in Latin.

Go ahead, guys, go over there and click onto that "buy" button πŸ‘πŸ˜…πŸ‘

I have searched online to try and find photos or an otherwise good description of how exactly the Martin blade to handle installation is done.
So far I have gathered that the blade stub tang is threaded, and that so too is the tube handle, and the blade and handle are screwed onto each other.
I would love to find a picture that shows the blade, guard, and handle, all prior to their final assembly. I haven't been able to find such a thing.

Probably 20 years ago, Ed Martin and his son would come to the big gun show in Tulsa twice a year. Almost bought one of the handmade models then, but didn't. I don't think he's making knives anymore, it was a thing between him and his son. When the son died unexpectedly(Afghanistan, I think), I believe Ed just gave up on life in general. Nice folks, too bad. And the Boker is a really decent knife. Not as flashy as a Lile-style Rambo knife, but useful, just the same.

EDIT: After checking, it appears my information was wrong. The Martin website is up, and knives are available. The Apparo 7 starts at $525. The Boker is 90% of the knife at less than 20% of the price...

Another "cool to have" piece for your diverse collection πŸ‘Œ

Sure looks like a rugged beast. I would bite too for that price. Steel sounds decent too. Looks to be a good survival knife. Hope you are satisfied.

For me it will just be a representation of it's kind within my collection.
I'm just like most other folks that tend to collect "things"... The item(s) often have some connection to some sort of nostalgia.
I'd love to include one of the Buckmaster knives into my collection, but they just have shot up way more than I'm willing to spend on one. But, maybe some day I'll run into a great deal, and I will be able to justify it's purchase πŸ‘πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

Heck, the Buckmaster even has a book out about them. Quite a few twists and turns during it's history.

The Buckmaster's blade is what the US Military's M9 bayonet blade is based upon.
Here's a picture of my Ontario Knife Company USA made M9 bayonet for visual comparison...

The M9 also has a hefty and short knife tang assembly, similar to some hollow tube handled survival knives.
Here's a picture I found online that shows the stubby tang that the M9 bayonet has...

Did Gerber make a copy of that knife? A buddy bought one exactly like that probably 30 years ago, but I could have sworn it was a Gerber. Wish I had it today, he ended up pawning everything of value to fuel his meth habit. :(

I found this pic online of the one I think you mean. It's not a hollow tube handled survival knife, but it was one of their survival knives.
Could this be the one you remember?Screenshot_20220226-130807_(1).png

I recently watch a terrible movie called 'Scarlett' that had a Newton Martin knife in it. The knife is first shown 15 minutes in.

Seeing a Martin knife in the movie was the best part of the entire thing.

That's cool. How were you able to tell it was a Martin knife? Did they get real close in shots of it?

I only now know about the Martin Father & Son knife making team, after I was doing some research on the Boker Plus survival knife that they designed and licensed to Boker.
It's sad about him losing his son πŸ˜”

So...how much emergency concentrated alcohol will the handle hold ? ;)
