I ruined my para :(

If I had that knife, I would rub it a bit with Scotch brite, oil the pivot, sharpen it and get it back in my pocket. I think you will be okay. If the action is super gritty, I might buff off the pivot contact area, but I would not get into the where the lock mates at all.

Best wishes,

Doug

I think I would give it a good sanding down before I wrote it off as ruined.

Thank you for the picture. Question: is it really coming apart, or does it just look like dogmeat? You are in a much better position than folks like me sitting on the other end of an LCD screen, but it doesn't appear from here to have actually started coming apart. I'd start with a fresh green Scotchbrite and see what happens. You may loose the Spyder logo. I sort of doubt your knife is actually ruined. (Here's hoping...)

Can you post pictures? CPM D-2 is not a laminate and is nearly stainless. I'm not a metallurgist or chemist, but I'm having a hard time imagining that six hours in household vinegar could do this to a CPM D2 blade.

only pics i have are above^

unfortunately I didn't take pics of it in action, but the top "layer" literally bubbled up and peeled/flaked off.

I don't believe it is a laminated or chromed blade, but I can only describe what I saw visually.

here is a pic of the pivot:

you can see the intact portions around the pivot area, these areas are raised compared to the rest of the surface.

also, the slight copper color is from scrubbing with a chore boy, this isn't coming off, lol.

just noticed, you can see a piece flaking off inside the spydie hole on this pic

the looks I can deal with, but the pitting is deep, the action will probably never be the same. I suspect it will be usable once I get the edge right (chips are deep), but it probably wouldnt be the same without resurfacing

Wow. That's weird how the pivot area has spots that are shiny and raised. Almost makes me wonder if if the vinegar formed a small outer layer of rust that actually came off?

If it were me, I would sand that entire blade with 120 grit sandpaper (maybe 150 grit) and then I would go to about 400 grit, and then 600 grit.

I would leave the lock face until last and I would simply go lightly and sand it a couple times with the 400 grit just to get the crap off. To me this knife has potential. I would be happy to do that for you if you felt like sending me the blade.

When you did this did you have the entire knife in or did you remove the blade and do it?

How are the nested liners?

^ yes, I have seen your pics :) looks good.

just the blade was in the vinegar-everything else is fine.

the steel oxidized and the oxidized layer came off. I would gather it looked worse to you than it really was. I think some polish and elbow grease and it will look new.

So, hows that new Military M4 gonna work out for everybody? :D

why don't you send the blade out for some pimping. I would send it out for a Krein Regrind, then stonewash the blade, then a nice resharpening job.

Have you considered contacting Spyderco to see if they would take a swing at re-polishing/fixing? I am not sure what they would charge but its worth checking out.
To me it doesn't look all that bad....

I was thinking the same thing. Let Tom clean it up and make it a real one-of-a-kind D-2 Paramilitary.

Probably the best idea yet.

Tom would be able to make this thing sweeeeeeet.

I did offer to clean it up for you in an earlier post, but I will not be able to make it as nice as Tom can. If it were my knife I would send it to Tom.

Contact him via phone or email on his site.
