Or; How to ship a knife!!
I have decided a padded envelope is no way to ship a knife. It doesn't show the proper respect. Check out this "knifeless" package!
I show up at the P.O, expecting a nice little vintage Schrade, probably "won" for less then the seller's expectations, and all I get is this package with a hole in it!
What am I to think??
The knife is here;

Makes a guy paranoid!!:thumbdn:

Hmmm...

It makes one wonder if the knife had a little help in pushing a hole through that envelope.:grumpy:

Shouild be shipped in box. Nobody can feel what's inside, and help push it out like an envelope.

that sucks, I only sell a couple knives on ebay every once in awhile, but I charge less for shipping than he does, and send it Priority Mail in priority mail boxes that the post office will bring to your house for free, and pick up when you print out the label, and it only costs 4.60 with delivery confirmation

It says in ad that insurance is included, so I guess you'll at least get your purchase price back from them, I wish you the best in your resolution.

The seller just wrote back and offered a full refund. That's all he can do, so I am grateful.
Too bad some jerk has a knife he/she can't enjoy. . . . .not really anyway.

Time to go to Paypal. File an "Item not received".

If the seller cannot produce a signed delivery receipt, you get a refund.

They sell knives, the little Priority boxes are free. Everybody knows that.

Too bad, that is a very nice knife.

I have received or better would have received a number of knives "loose" in envelope. People that pack that way are retarded.

I agree especially when the priority mail boxes are FREE

Charlie, too bad about that....I had bid on that one but glad it went to you but sux about it getting lost.

BTW, PM me about something interesting...

That bites the big-n Charlie!. :thumbdn:

I am glad you got the word from the seller that he will refund your money though. Hopefully the seller will get a valuable life lesson regarding using the proper shipping parcel containers in the future!

probably "won" for less then the seller's expectations

If one was really paranoid, what better way to renege on this transaction than mailing a padded envelope that you poked a hole in yourself. You reimburse the buyer (including freight?) and wellah you're a stand up guy who still has a knife to sell in another venue.

The seller has over 2000 transactions. You would think that he would have some previous negetive experience putting small hard objects in padded bags.

Maybe not a likely scenario but at the same time I don't think you can rule it out.

Ron, you absolutely CAN rule out your paranoid scenario. If you will note the postage label in the photo, the seller actually took the item to the PO and had them put the postage thereon. Since $1.65 in insurance was added (the knife sold for <$50), that means the knife cost $1.70 (by weight) to ship. This proves the knife WAS in the envelope when the seller handed it to the post office, since an empty envelope would not cost $1.70 to ship. And of course, once he handed the envelope to the PO Clerk to be weighed, he never touched it again. Thus, your paranoid scenario goes the way of most conspiracy theories.

And Ron, if this seller still uses padded envelopes after 2000 transactions, perhaps his experience actually validates their usage? I personally have shipped hundreds of knives in padded envelopes, and not lost a single one (though all are in factory boxes, or padded with foamwrap). Even if you feel compelled to ship in a box, you can buy small white shipping boxes that will generally still keep you under the 13oz First Class Cut-off, and even counting the cost of that small shipping box, you are still coming out better that with a "free" priority mail box.

For those of you advocating using Priority Mail, please consider that an uninsured pocket knife typically costs between $1.50-$2.50 to ship 1st Class (including DC ) in a padded envelope and Priority mail STARTS at $4.60. Further, unless one is shipping cross country, I have found that Priority Mail and First class mail arrive in about the same amount of time, thus the extra $2-3 is just non-deductible Post Office charity.

The bottom line is that there are always going to be some sticky fingers at the USPS, and I do not believe that feeling a small pocket knife in an envelope is going to turn anyone to a life of crime. The real crime is the cost of Priority Mail since early 2007! It now costs me as $7.00 to ship a 17oz item from Alabama to Calif via Priority mail. :barf: But that is for another UGLY thread....

Cheers!

Hi Darkfin,

You're probably right, but just for grins I'm going to check the cost of mailing a 6 x 9 padded envelope next time I'm at the P.O.

Best,

Had an eBay seller send me a Marbles Woodcraft in one of those padded envelopes. Since there was no sheath, he covered the edge with a single layer of marking tape (I mean, you wouldn't want to waste.). That left the point, which was sticking 1/2" out of the envelope when it arrived. Not too swift.

On the other paw, some eBayers do a first rate job of packing goods for transit.

Bummer. I've gotten knives from ebay packed in all kinds of ways, but at least they all got to me. Funniest was a little MOP Schrade cutlery that was packaged in a plastic cassette tape box.

On another mailing issue, a friend last year recommended that I use a post office box for receiving knives I buy off ebay or wherever else, his reasoning being that I shouldn't want anyone to know of the (some) valuable knives I own that are kept in my home. I took his advice.

I have received the same style envelope looking much the same way, but luckily, with the knife amazingly still there. Hope you were not robbed. But it sucks no matter what. You are out a knife and cash no matter what happened.

Anyone that ships a knife in a padded envelope should accept full responsibility if it arrives in the condition this one did.
