I suck at the knife exchange! Do you?

Seriously, I'm not good at it.

I see something that looks nice then I have to go do some research on it. I don't know a whole lot about all the different brands, pricing, knife details, etc. Once I figure out the details and decide I want it, it's gone.

The other thing that happens is, I watch knives on eBay. Then I keep watching the exchange for that same knife. I finally give up on the exchange and buy the knife off of eBay.

Within 24hrs, that knife will be on the exchange for well below what I just paid.

I suck at this. It appears you have to be much faster than I to buy off the exchange here.

Be glad you don't live in the antipodes.

My biggest issue is that I don't know what I want.

I first saw the Factor tonight and loved the look and roughly 3" blade. Did some quick research to make sure it wasn't a pile of crap, and it was gone. Then the second one I was just too slow.

I've been using a Real Steel Gerfalcon for my travel knife. The detent is real light. So light that upon putting my pants on the other day, the blade opened in my pocket. I didn't cut my hand but could have. So I'm putting the Gerfalcon on yard/car work duty and looking at the Factor for travel.

Hey...GOOD IDEA! I just bought my Slysz Bowie today that way...

Let's see how it goes for me.

These things were $65 a while back on sale, so they can make a whole $5 for the price I'm willing to pay. That'll get you a box at Taco Bell. lol

If you're like me, even if you know you want it, you'll be too late to get it.

I'm with you. I'm too indecisive with my purchases to do the exchange here.

Sometimes takes me days to decide if I really want to buy a knife. So even when a knife I want pops up on here, I have to think about it, and when my minds made up, its gone.

Guess I should just made a mental list of the knives I know I want, and the maximum price I'll pay for them.

Don’t forget, this can be a blessing. If you rush into a purchase, don’t do enough research or opt to not ask questions cause you’re worried others will snatch up a knife, you mind end up with a knife you regret buying. Or worse, you regret it and the knife has some issue your weren’t aware of.

I have always had good luck with the exchange. I've gotten some great knives at great prices from good people. You have to have a mental list of what you are looking for at any given point in time, with a good feel for how much you are willing to pay, and then when something pops up, you know whether to jump on it or let it pass.

I've tried a few times, but I live in the Netherlands and that makes it difficult. Then I was in the middle of a move, so I wanted FedEx instead of USPS (because USPS sometimes takes months). Ofcourse, since I never bought or sold a knife before, I have zero feedback. Also, some people demand payment within three hours or something. That's a bit hard when there's several timezones in between.

I've bought the gold membership for a year to try out the exchange. I thought the PM function would be practical. I think I may try again in a few months. If it doesn't work then, I'm writing this off as a failed experiment. I guess it's just not for me.

Well if you want to see how good you are just wait for the next CPK puts a few CFK's up for sale, that'll test ya. :D You'll have 200 people jumping for 20 blades in two minutes.

Sometimes the timing has to be right. I missed several knives before, only to finally get one at a later date. Just be persistent and check constantly lol :p

Seems like the knives you want the most, go the quickest. It's when you're no longer interested in a knife that it seems to stay on the exchange forever. ;)
I'm at an average of 10 to 1 strike outs getting a knife I want. But, it is better to have patience because when the timing is right, it's your turn :D.

I would say don't be in a rush. I've bought several items (GECs) off of the auction site early on that I now realize I paid (way) too much for and will never get my money back, feeling the fool. (Not that it is about the money for me.)

Don't get me wrong, I've willingly bought other knives I thought/knew at the time where over market value because I wanted it. And I've also fell into excellent deals because I was in the right place at the right time.

And then there is one common knife that I just can't get: it is either too high priced, I was just a little late, excellent price but didn't have the money at the time, $10 off on price and neither of us would budge....
