I think i am going to do it/ pre-new years resolution

SO, i've seen a few threads along the lines of...I'm only going to edc ONE knife for a predetermined amount of time.
and i am now going to do the same, except i am going to add the added onus of making it a new years resolution!

I am going to try and carry only one knife until spring (i'll say May 1st). I have gotten to the point that i fully understand i can get by with any one of my knives. they all work, they all will do what i need them too, cut stuff. I am not going to be unrealistic and say i will not use other tools when necessary (ie my box cutter at work when i cut carpet or drywall, i mean sure my knives will do it, but if i have the right tool for the job why keep having to fix my edge) nor will i limit myself to my pocket knife for kitchen duty..cause well, i dont cook all that much. But if the situation allows it I will strive to use my edc as a steak knife etc etc.

the question is which knife. I have decided on this one.

I have chosen my soddie for many reasons
1) have to decided to get my niece and nephew sodbuster jrs for christmas (in stainless cause they are like 11 and 12 lol) and it will mean more if they get a knife JUST like their uncle.
2) single bladed knives are growing on me, like many others on this site i've been noticing here lately. It is more comfortable than multibladed knives and perhaps most importantly, since it is winter, i can open my soddie without having to take off my gloves :D
3) being that my soddie is CV i want to see if i cant get the patina thick/dark enough to survive a mississippi summer without having to remove rust every single day, and carrying it for like 5 straight months OUGHT to put a solid patina on it
4) its cheap and easy to replace if its somehow lost or stolen. I think we often over-think our knives. We compare and contrast different steels, different handle colors/materials, different blade shapes, buying new knives trying to find "the one". But if your one of those folks that has a custom knife built to your specifications or even buying a higher end knife (GEC or what have you) how feasible is it for you to replace in the event of theft/loss/breakage?
5) I honestly think that something like this will teach me exactly what i need/dont need, like/dont like in a knife. it will (hopefully) show me what is the "best" knife for me.
6) and finally, i've done alot of reading about soddies, alot of talk about how tough they are with their large pin. Lets see if this thing is as tough as everyone says it is.

anyways, what this post is, is a pledge that i will carry/edc my soddie everyday until may 1st. I will not say i wont carry a 2nd knife (although i dont plan on it) if the situation warrants it. I often carry my wenger SI if i am going on a long trip or if expecting bad weather because tools are useful and handy especially if you decide to expect the unexpected. But the soddie will be there and for the vast majority of the time it will be there by himself.

anyways, the experts always say your more likely to stick to a resolution if you announce it and involve others that will hold you accountable, so that is what I am doing.

Wondering if anyone else is crazy/dedicated enough to try this with me. Feel free to set a different timeline (a month for somebody, 6 weeks for someone else etc etc)

and i am done, i just realized how much of a mini-novel i just typed lol

Excellent choice!!....Im partial to my two blade trappers, but i have no doubt a good cv soddy will get you through whatever the Gods throw at you.....Good luck!.........................FES

I always have a SAK (usually a Pioneer/Farmer/Soldier) in addition so my EDC (which is often a Yellow CV Soddie Jr)...

So I salute you my friend but in my case:
"Man's got to know his limitations" and I must be able to rotate my EDC knives.... :)

Good luck!!!!

thanks! i'll probably end up needing it :P i just realized thats like a 5 1/2 month commitment

Good choice. Great knife IMO. Some food prep will soon build up a patina.

Good luck :)

The longest I went was one month... this is almost a monastic vow!
I believe you chose wisely. The sodbuster is a good all-purpose design and should serve you well.

I recently found my "grail." It's a Svord Mini Peasant Knife. Since I've gotten it, I don't really want to carry anything else, although if I'm going to a more formal affair, I will carry a smaller knife instead. We'll see how long my love affair with this knife lasts... maybe we can compare notes in May!

A brave thing to do, the only reason I say this is because I know I have my other knives there waiting :)

I think the CV Soddie is a great knife, but personally, if I was to try this challenge I would lean more toward the Sheepsfoot Barlow that Charlie has bough out if trying a single blade, or the Clip point Barlow.

If the challenge was for two or more, I would use one of my very old Cattle knives as a Traditional challenge - or a HJ.
Good luck my friend - it will be great reading your "blog" that hopefully you will be keeping us up-dated here in your thread!

Nope, I'm crazy enough, but not dedicated enough... I'm winding down on the three knife experiment; in the next few days I will have the opportunity to carry some of my other knives again. So, no, I won't try this thing with you. Not a this time anyway. Good luck on your venture.

I will say again, that for the things that we carry a pocketknife for, we don't need to have a large, but finite, number of knives. Any of us probably has several knives that will do anything we need to do with a pocketknife. In my past, there has been several times that I carried the same pocket knife for years (or until I lost it, whichever came first) and I could do it again, but not now, not at this time.

I wish you well on the venture, maybe I'll go back into training to do the same as I get into next year, but I've got two new 48s that are screaming at me to carry them. And a Barlow with a spey blade doing the same.

Well you made a great choice, the Sodbuster is a fine edc pocket knife. I wish you luck. I wasn't able to finish a similar personal challenge recently but did learn a lot about what works and doesn't work for me. And it was a lot of fun. Keep us posted once in a while as to how your doing. I will be rooting for you and will be curious as to your experiences.

Jim

What were some of your other choices?

of the serious contenders?
GEC 85
Case medium texas jack.

other choices would include
buck 301
wenger SI
Victorinox farmer
case full size trapper
buck 309
rough rider barlow
case slimline trapper

Good luck my friend - it will be great reading your "blog" that hopefully you will be keeping us up-dated here in your thread!

lol sure, i'll keep posting here every so often. but blog updates will likely consist of picture updates to show patina difference and "yep still going strong" or "oops i fell off the wagon today" lol

but i'll try and keep some sort of record about how the sodbuster works out, strengths and weakness etc etc as i go

Good for you. I don't think I could do it. I would suggest not buying any new knives during this period! You would be real likely to fall off the wagon.

I have carried a single knife for several years on several occasions. Then it was due to the fact that I only had one and when I switched from one to another it was because I lost the previous one. I never thought about having multiple pocket knives, I didn't even know anyone that had multiples. My how things have changed. While I am sure you can do this I will respectfully decline the invite to join. I am enjoying rotating this one for that one, sometimes in the same day, way to much. I know you will learn some things from this venture, I do hope you will share them with us.

Chris

Im not ready to join this party my friend. While I only rotate less then half a dozen on a regular basis, they all have their place. I will however volunteer to put your 85 to use if it starts to show signs of neglect :D Good Luck

Like others here I have gone years with the same knife. I know anyone of mine would work but im not in a commitment phase right now....as far as knives go, im single and ready to mingle

When I was young and poor, I carried the same knife for well over a decade. A forced monogamy.

Now that I am old and prosperous, I have a full harem of beauties to attend to. For me, there's no going back!
But all power to you on your pilgrimage . . . . I hope you discover the ONE!

I'm toting these again today to support your effort!

Good luck on your resolution. The soddie's a solid choice.

Finding an exact replacement isn't that important if you keep this in mind.

I have gotten to the point that i fully understand i can get by with any one of my knives. they all work, they all will do what i need them too, cut stuff.

It isn't really possible to replace a long carried knife anyways. Sure you can get another of the same model, but attachment often forms with a companion tool. No new knife will be quite the same.

Although I carried an LB5 for eight years in my younger days ( lost it, bought another one the next day and carried the new one for 27 years, until I lost it, too), it would be an exercise in frustration for me. Couldn't do it if I tried. Since the second lost knife, I've accumulated a menagerie that sings siren's songs I can't ignore, for the life of me. It's all I can do to pick the loudest singer each morning.
I applaud your effort and wish you success. You'll learn more about yourself than you will about the knife, i suspect, so it'll be a worthwhile endeavor, no matter which outcome unfolds.
