I think I have a problem

I‘ll use my first childhood friend‘s life as an example, for many of life’s acquisition quandries. (I use the Bible, but won’t drill down here)
He was a steward for one of the biggest airlines in the day. This was when, you had to be very attractive. Think Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. He was handsome. Everytime, he came home he brought a trophy girlfriend. He finally married one, who was featured in there co.’s ads, mags, billboards, TV etc.. Stunning. Problem was, she knew it. It didn’t last. Back to the treadmill.
Time marches on. So does appearance. So does opportunity missed.
IMHO, you’re on a treadmill. Step off (stop shopping) long enough to get the big picture of what knives you like, & need. Look at what you have, it may be in front you.

(stop shopping
Or learn to "window shop" , i.e. enjoy just looking/researching without buying .

Develop a "want to buy " short list ,but wait for that rare great deal to appear to pull the trigger .

If a deal never materializes for a particular knife , I generally just let it go ...there's always another I'll want just as much .

Every time I get that one last knife, I find myself looking at all the knife sites for something else within hours. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and I think that's part of it. I seem to be able to find one thing on every knife that I would like to change. To big to small, different grind, steel, handle material, shape, texture...
I'm a knife addict and I have a problem:confused:
I assure you that you are a perfectly adjusted, well balanced individual with excellent taste and phenomenal intelligence...........just like me!
Change nothing!

Not a problem at all OP, imho. You'll finally get to a point where you no longer want to buy so many knives in a short period of time. Therefore, until then and if your finance allows, just continue to buy whatever knives you want.

Prerequisite is at least 100 knives ! ( If you don't own 100+ knives you don't have a problem )

Kids fed?...Roof above?...then you're OK for now. It's just money, and there's no real reason to value it over your own enjoyment.

However, I think eventually you'll come to the conclusion that happiness lies in being grateful with and appreciating what you have rather than a constant cycle of purchasing anew.

My advice: Slow down. Research, read here, watch YouTube videos; go deep down rabbit holes. Get into customization and tinkering. Sharpening. Evaluate your collection when making new purchases to see if this new knife is filling the need of a knife you have already experienced owning and have lost enthusiasm for, and list that one for sale in the exchange. You'll soon realize that there is a whole world of enjoyment within this hobby beyond pure ownership.

Now, all that being said, can't talk now...I gotta go click refresh on that new arrivals page ;)

It took me years of buying, selling, and trading to really know what I like in a knife.

I bought a nice display/storage case, and told myself I would stop when it was full. Any new acquisitions would require I sell, trade, or giveaway one in that case.

That case is absolutely full. However, I do not find myself upset, as the only knives I now desire are in a high enough price bracket that I must sell some and save up. I have a lot of other expenses approaching, and one very unexpected one happened two days before Christmas, so a new knife is a long way off.

$940 two days before Christmas, as the TV shorted and blew it and the stereo receiver out while guests were visiting. Next week my car goes in for body work, $1800 plus rental car cost. $1500 in attorney fees in November.

It's important not to extend oneself yo far, be prepared for emergencies.

I'm currently also freaking out about the about to pass Illinois gun control law, which is hgoing to cost me money as well. In the long run it will be deemed unconstitutional, but it's expected to pass Monday. I won't be able to sell some of what I was getting ready to.

There are only two known cures for this behavior:
Bankruptcy
Death at the hands of an enraged Spouse.
Enjoy the ride! 😁👍

It is a strange phenomenon especially to non knife people. In the last two months I have added a full size adamas and a superfreak to the tune of almost 600 dollars. I'm happy with both knives but now I find myself eying up the m390 bug out! Another knife of almost 300 dollars. You will never find "the one". In all honesty the superfreek should logically check all the boxes for me. But my wandering eye keeps wandering. We tell ourselves things like "I work hard and I deserve it" but at the end of the day we are all trying to scratch an itch that can't be scratched. Addictive behavior encompasses a very broad spectrum indeed.

I have three passions: billiards/pool, loose leaf tea, and knives. This is by far the most expensive, and I collect "budget" knives exclusively. LOL.

All kidding aside…if you feel like this is a problem, it very well could be. You might want to get a professional opinion.

Way I see it, there's two ways to go, here: invest in some equipment and start making them the way you want them, or invest in an existing maker who can do up something exactly the way you want it, for this particular current custom knife.

Either way, this well has no bottom. May the Powers protect your wallet.

It never works out that way. If you want a cheaper hobby: buy a boat or a motorhome! 🤣

I feel your pain. I’ve spent $4200 on three knives in the past week. Not normal for me but I came into a bit of money and wanted to splurge.
As a side note into the psychology of it all, I believe this hobby, as well as others, provides an escape from the daily grind of the job, the family issues, the bills, etc. if you’re buying too much (in your opinion) maybe take a step back and see if there’s not other issues you’re looking to avoid. Just my 2 cents.

You just need to come to the factual realization that you are not wasting money on consumables - champagne, caviar, concubines - no, you are trading cheap fiat currency, which will surely be nearly worthless as soon as next week maybe, for solid items of inestimable worth in the near future.

Buy more knives today! Do not hesitate at all!
