Hello Cate,
At the very bottom right of each post is an icon with quote marks inside a comment bubble and with a "+" sign next to it. That's the multi-quote button. For each post to which you wish to respond, click the multi-quote button on that post. Then when you click, "Reply to thead", each of those posts will be quoted in your response. It simplifies the matter.
