I think I might hate light wood (or, my KITH knife blues)

Ron, that's a good point and perhaps the answer to the mystery. Other than just being more careful with the sanding though, I'm not sure what to do to prevent that in the future?

I sand my scales about a 1/4" oversize allaround,that way the rounding issue is cut off before glue up.I cut them on the bandsaw about a 1/16" oversize then glue up and sand off the rest after they set up.
I sand mine to atleast 150 grit.

Sand the scales, oversized like Stan said, have the leading edge of the sand paper on the dovetail so if you get the rounded effect it will be in the best place to hide it. Being aware of it also helps with the sanding by how you hold the scale and where you push.
I leared theis effect by making a wooden hand plane and having to sand the bottom dead flat. Cheers Ron.
