I think our cats are hunters...

Over the last couple of days, I found two small squirrel tails in our backyard. The only thing I can figure is that our cats caught and ate them, and found that the tails weren't that tasty. I found the first tail on Friday or Saturday, and he second one just now.

My wife is in shock that this is happening, but I see it as one of those "circle of life" sort of things...

I had a cat used to do the same thing. Eat the whole squirrel and leave the tail.

can i borrow them?

we had 4 snake bites on our dogs within a week at one point last month, all in my backyard...

i'd post pics of what was left of the only one snake i found, but last time i did that the "sensitive" among us were offended, lol. let's just say that i am out for revenge!

i need me some good cats like yours...

We had a cat that used to catch flying squirrels and left their flat little tails on the back porch. Made great hat band ornaments. Better that the cats catch those squirrels first before the squirrels get into your house.

Every prey animal eaten by a cat, is one less food source for the natural predators to eat. Outside cats up-set the balance.

^^^^

The OP's killer cats live in San Jose California -- I'm sure the city's ecosystem will be OK.

Consider yourself lucky. My cat kills them (and rabbits and moles and birds), drags them into my storage barn where he sleeps, and may or may not eat them. What he leaves tends to get ripe quickly, and I'm left to clean up after him.

I had 2 females, who were sisters, and the hunted as a pair. I've seen them take down a Blue Jay and one would swat it around for a while and the other watched then they would switch. They would bring lizards (anoles) to the back door and leave dead ones like an offering!

I say, turn abouts fair play!!! I lost a cat to a damn OWL:mad:. If a cat kills to eat, so be it. I have seen more dogs kill to eat then any cat.

Russ,

Just FYI but those are WOLVES and not dogs roaming about.
Not to mention the 11 ft bears.

piglet

when my cat catches rat he just leaves the tail and nuts at the stairs, he just kills the snakes and leaves them at the steps also but doesent eat them

The pattern here is obvious---"unnecessary" killing of wildlife. And all are fine with this?

How is it unnecessary?

Cats kill pests -- rodents and pest birds.

The cat eats -- the rodent is gone -- it's all good.

Over the last 15 years, my adopted feral cat has brought down and, occasionally, brought in everything from birds to rabbits - but no squirrels, even though we have dozens of grey and even a few black ones. She was born wild and has steadfastly refused to be a strictly an indoor cat, although in her old age she's grown more wary and divides her time 50/50, mostly remaining on our small property.
My point is this: our neighbors quickly accepted her hunting once they saw the number of mice and even rats, by far her main prey, that she brought in from around our suburban neighborhood and nearby landfill. Mankind has negatively impacted and altered the ecological landscape far, far more than any cat. Now cats, both pets and feral ones, are just filling the needed predator role instead of the native prowlers we have for the most part eliminated. Our county actually supports the spaying or neutering of feral cats, then releases them back into the wild to provide rodent control.
I know my roaming cat Speedbump may very well someday provide some wandering coyote or fox or big bird a snack - but that's the rules by which she's insisted on living and I for one can't fault her decision. It's her nature (Read Tribe of Tiger, a great book on our cats and their behavior)
One last soapbox: Please be responsible and SPAY or NEUTER those roaming pets!
