I gifted my stainless spyderco poliwog to my doctor, a few years ago. It was my favorite edc since they came out and now discontinued. It had served me well. The Doc mentioned that he wanted to get a really good pocket knife one day. And asked for my recommendation. I reached in my pocket and handed him my trusted spyderco. Long story short. The Doc edc'ed that knife reliegously. On a vist, he told me that the clip broke and he had tried to get a replacement. The Doc contacted the spyderco. He was told that he would have to pay for a new wire clip, since it was a discontinued knife. I was a little surprised and embarrassed. So on my follow up visit. I gave him a Delica. Now I am going to see about getting him a clip and if I have to? I will pay for it.

Not sure why you'd be embarrassed. He used the knife diligently and the clip eventually gave way.

I'm not sure about Spyderco and having to pay for a clip but because of their constant quality improvement system they may not always have clips on hand which is frustrating.

Benchmade does offer free clips as part of their Lifesharp service. Up to 10 a year I believe although they never said no when I would request them. Different companies have different policies.

I will just track one down. I am funny about my gifts. It's like a personl warranty.

The good doctor didn't want to drop a whole $5 on a clip? Seriously? Business must be really slow...

Clips don't usually just break out of no where. They usually get snagged in seat belts or when carrying things at your side, squeezing through a tight space, etc. That is not a defect in materials or craftsmanship.

I don't know the whole story, but I can't imagine why Spyderco didn't hook your doctor up. Something doesn't sound right...

Spyderco is my favorite knife maker that said they are not kershaw or benchmade when it comes to customer service if you dont pay you are not getting it . Benchmade send you clips for free kershaw send you clips they even sharpen your knife and ship it for free . Spyderco charge $5.00 for shipping it back .

I own Benchmades - good knives, but it seems to me that comparable knives from Benchmade are more expensive in many cases than their Spyderco counterparts. While I realize the two lines and companies are very different, if Spyderco charged another $15-$30 each for their knives, they might be sending out free pocket clips. :)

Spyderco use to be cheaper . Not any more most of there Taiwan made blade are 200 plus . And that's a fact . Benchmade do have MAP . I bought three new one this year . The 761 , 484-1 , 940-1 all for way less than MAP . Well worth what I paid for . The only spyderco I bought this year was a Dice that I got at the exchange . I wouldn't pay 170 for the dice not worth it but 130 is just right .

I called Spyderco about a clip replacement for my rescue knife about a year ago. They wanted to charge me too.

Spyderco's custom service won't send you a free clip even if it's a brand new knife, with a scratched up clip. I've called them on this a few times and they always ask if I bought it direct from Spyderco. When I say no I bought it from a dealer they tell me "It could have been messed up after they shipped it to the dealer." Which I believe is nonsense as most dealers don't even remove knives from the box. The one time I did get a replacement clip no charge, was when I asked Sal about a badly marred up clip that came on my brand new Ti Military and he had a new clip sent.

Of course Spyderco makes you pay for a pocket clip, it's how they keep the cost of their fantastic US made knives down to around $100. It's like $5 and they ship immediately, when I foolishly broke a pocket clip I was grateful that it was so inexpensive.

Benchmade charges $100 for a hollow handled Griptillian, and $150+ for anything with steel liners and a G10 handle. They can afford to send out pocket clips to everyone who breaks one.

Comparing similar knives (US made with steel liners and G10) like the Manix 2 and the Benchmade 710, the Benchmade is 50% more expensive.

Taiwanese and Japanese Spydercos cost more because their level of fit and finish puts most American production knives to shame.

In the big scheme of things, big deal 5 bucks for a pocket clip. I wouldn't be losing sleep over it.

I was quoted $8.95 for my clip. In the big scheme of things, you are right, the cost of a pocket clip is not a big deal. If you look, however, at the street price of Spyderco's Byrd line or other budget knives they offer, the cost of $8.95 for a pocket clip is just flat out crazy.

Can we look at this differently for a moment? Benchmade recently sent me three new clips, screws, and a replacement thumb stud for my Griptillian. Let us ignore everything but the cost of the clips and assume that cost is 8.95 per unit. Benchmade has, in effect, saved me over twenty-six bucks. Factor in the thumb stud, screws and shipping, we my be closer to thirty dollars.

Now, drop the price to five dollars each and ask yourself the following question. Why does Benchmade provide consumers with five dollar pocket clips at no charge over and over again? The answer is simple, they don't. The cost of a pocket clip is not any where near that amount. Even Knife Kits.com retails their clips for less than five dollars.

How was it stated above? "I like Spiderco, but that is lame." I have to agree. It is sad to see that Spyderco is a lone wolf when it comes to customer service, considering that Benchmade, CRKT, DPX, and Kershaw are all known to have provided pocket clips at no charge to consumers. Gerber has even treated me better.

I can't think of any Japanese made spyderco that had a comparable level of fit and finish to comparable American made knives. And they cost more? I don't see what you're comparing them to. And by the way, spyderco is expanding their U.S factories if that says anything to you.
