I thought a broken clip was warrantyed

Many years ago the US Schrade company had the best warranty. They even replaced a knife if you lost it! The warranty slip was packed with the knife and you just had to send it in to get a new one. My thought at the time was that they were probably priced to cover the cost of two knives. In the same light when companies give free clips or other parts it tells you they're priced to cover that expense from the git-go. Those of us adroit enough to not break clips or strip screws are paying for replacements others are using. You're welcome.

When you buy a benchmade chances are it'll last you for life. When you buy a spyderco if the tip breaks off it should be "retired from use".

Of course Spyderco makes you pay for a pocket clip, it's how they keep the cost of their fantastic US made knives down to around $100. It's like $5 and they ship immediately, when I foolishly broke a pocket clip I was grateful that it was so inexpensive.

Benchmade charges $100 for a hollow handled Griptillian, and $150+ for anything with steel liners and a G10 handle. They can afford to send out pocket clips to everyone who breaks one.

Comparing similar knives (US made with steel liners and G10) like the Manix 2 and the Benchmade 710, the Benchmade is 50% more expensive.

Taiwanese and Japanese Spydercos cost more because their level of fit and finish puts most American production knives to shame.

I do agree with you most benchmade are over priced for what you get on some of there knives . I'm one who like spyderco over most prduction knife makers . But I'm not a fan boy I call it how I see it . Some one posted that if spyderco went to make the Southard in the USA it will cost $400 now that's a joke . How is it that ZT can make knives at $240 with CF handle M390 steel and. TI lock . Then spyderco makes a knife like the Rubican and charge 300 for it good they went over seas with that one other wise it would have been $600 for s30v . For what it is I'm a big fan of Spyderco but they are not perfect and I don't agree with there prices on Taiwan made knives . I haven't bought a new Taiwan knife and will not unless they come back to the Gayle Bradley days an awsome knife for $140 .

Spyderco sent me the clip plus loktite for about the same price. I happily paid it. The clip is no longer used on their current knives, so I was happy they still had the part.

I don't believe a worn out clip, or a worn out anything, is a warranty repair. Does this mean you expect a warranty replacement when your tire's tread is worn out?:)

"I like Spiderco, but that is lame." I have to agree. It is sad to see that Spyderco is a lone wolf when it comes to customer service, considering that Benchmade, CRKT, DPX, and Kershaw are all known to have provided pocket clips at no charge to consumers. Gerber has even treated me better.
I took apart my skyline and leek and my dog knocked over the containers that had the screws and back spacers and i could not find some of the screws and the back spacers and i told Kershaw and the sent me both backspace and screws for free

Man a doctor got a free spyderco and won't pay $5 for a clip? He doesn't deserve it IMO. Its nice so many production companies have such great warranty service, but I'm not writing spyderco off cuz they charge $5 for extra clips. I like he benchmade, but they don't offer knives as affordable as spyderco. And someone expects free clips from the byrd line? Those knives are so well made for their cost its astonishing. But some folks are just always gunna complain. Friggin doctor won't ante up $5 for a clip he broke on a free knife...smh. Dude, don't give him any more blades, give things to people who need giving, not entitled rich boys/girls.

Not according to the doctor bill of my ex's new boyfriend.

Ha! Good one.

But seriously, why do people expect free stuff? I was sort of shocked Kershaw and BM sent out clips for free. BM charging what they now do for a grip does not make up for all the free clips in the world. Sort of shocking really that a PM2 is basically the same price as a grip, free clips be damned :D

I have had nothing but good customer service from all the companies I have dealt with in the knife industry, but BM sure has been exemplary.

Welcome to the wonderful world of entitlement. We want it all, we want it free, and we want it right now!

After carrying a brand new Gayle Bradley for 2 weeks, I noticed a screw missing from the handle.
I contacted Spyderco to see if they had any, or for the correct size to source my own.
Fully expecting to pay for the parts, they sent me 2, no charge.
I consider that very good customer service/relations.

I'll be sure to check tightness on all new knife fasteners from now on.

I had a Spyderco PM2 a while ago, and thought the same thing- that I could get a free replacement clip for it when it bent and eventually broke while I was reshaping it. I was used to Kershaw/ ZT and Benchmade warranty service so I emailed Spyderco. The clip was to cost me $6.99. The CS explained that they keep initial costs down by not forecasting the costs of replacement parts into the knife's price. After explaining that I had assumed the same from Spyderco as from the others (and admitting my own ignorance of their policy), the lady I was talking to sent me a one time free replacement complete with screws, a sticker, and a small tube of Loctite 243. I'm just as impressed with Spyderco as ZT, Benchmade and other companies with great CS.

For you folks who feel you should get "free" parts after you break something I need to know where you work.

I need to swing by for my free stuff.

Keep in mind, after S&H, your $5 fee is really closer to nine dollars. They quoted me $8.95 for clip and screws for my rescue knife. Almost double the cost. Charging that much for a replacement clip is considered opprobrious by some when compaired to the excellent CS from Spyderco's competitors. That is really what this is all about, isn't it? Compairing the quality of customer service between Spyderco and it's rivals?

I firmly believe that most of us are in agreement that Spyderco produces a quality product at a reasonable price point. Because of this, I can't picture anyone writing off Spyderco as a company because they want to charge a fee for a replacement clip. Nor can I picture anyone feeling entitled to free pocket clips for the Byrd series of knives that you call astonishing. What I call astonishing is that Spyderco will hold it's ground and charge a fee for clips when faced with the actions of it's competitors.

Yes... That's what's gotten them to where they are... By "following" the competition... [/sarcasm]

LOL. I as yet have to see Spyderco "follow" any of their competitors. They certainly offer a practical design at a reasonable price. Their FFG blade with it's thumb hole is hard to beat. Maybe that is why Spyderco has what some would consider a cult following.

The bottom line is this, all of us choose certain products and / or sevices because of the way they make us feel. Maybe it is because of the product itself or an employee that helped you make a decision as to what works best for you. On the flip side, you may avoid products or a business for the same reason, the way thay make you feel. I, for one, will never buy a knife again from one American maker because of how I was treated by one of their employees.

Some forum members will not buy Benchmade knives because they consider MAP prices an insult. I can understand that. Others are happy to puchase and use their products because of what the brand offers, including top notch customer service. You really can't ignore that Benchmade's reputation for great CS has, in some ways, come about because of all the clips and screws they give away.

With one of their employees? Must be indicative of the company as a whole.

Must've been quite pivotal. I hope you also included a strongly-worded letter.

Someone is kind and generous enough to give me a nice knife, then the pocket clip breaks..... not even gonna mention it and will gladly pay $5 for a replacement.

This is what a genuinely appreciative person would likely do - myself included! Replace it and never mention it.
