Well, I started on my first knife ever today.

Ats-34, 9'' over all, 4 1/8 from point to handle. 5/32 thick

I was going to build the whole knife with all hand tools except for a drill but after I broke my hacksaw a had to break out the 4 1/2'' grinder.

I still have a bit of grinding to finish the profile then I can play with files!!!!

I have not decided on handle material yet but I think I am going to go with some birdseye maple.

I am going to use brass round stock for pin material, not sure of diamater yet!

here is a picture of my sketch and of the knife so far, I will be updating as I build it.
Please feel free to critique.
Thanks for looking!!!!

That will work :D:D:thumbup: Keep us posted on progress.

I started to file the profile to smooth it all out, I still need to get a half round file so I can smooth out the bottom of the handle area, and a chain saw file to do the little round section where the edge ends(sorry I do not know the name)

Here is a pic of me doing the draw filing on the bottom !!!

Yes I am working on my little deck. Its the only place I have right now to do any work like this!

Here is a pic of my filing vise:D, I know its not much but all I have, I am hoping to build a few knives and then sell a couple so I can get me a nice vise and belt grinder!!

you can take a wooden dowel and wrap in sandpaper to smooth up the handle profile :)

BigErn,

Man I give you all the respect in the world pardner. I love WIP's like this. Just shows you dont need a KMG or anything of the sort to profile and make a functional blade. Although a good belt grinder will certainly help speed things along:D Get a few finished and do just as you said "sell them to get what ya need"

Coming along nicely man. Looking forward to the next and end results!!!

I agree with 45 man, good for you! I give you tons of credit, great post too - appreciate the pictures, gives me inspiration.

Looks like you have the will and have found a way! Sorry to inform you that this craft/art is very addictive and you have probably already gone too far to expect any kind of reasonable recovery. Good luck and keep those pictures coming! It is looking like it will be a good one.

Sorry, no pics yet. I have almost got the filing done, just have to do a bit more on each side. I decided to go with walnut scales.
I will be posting more pictures when I am done filing and drilling some holes.

I think I might try to sell this knife to buy some 1084 or 1095 and a craftsman
2x42 belt sander........... not sure if I will get that much for it.

thanks all for the good words so far, they are much appreciated:thumbup:

Ok, I had to upload some pics,

I have a little more filing to do and then that part will be done.
then I am going to flat sand the handle area, drill my holes and send it out to get heat treated and tempered.

That knife is looking great! I don't think I could get that far with hand tools. Good Job! Make sure you get it cleaned up as nice as you can before heat treat. It will be a bitch to get any deep scratches out once that's done.
