I took the plunge (first knife build)

People like you are the proof that knifemaking can be done with minimal equipment with good results and you doing everything right from the begining is very impressive. (Sheath plus building your own etcher already, etc)

My first knife didn't have the luxory of being this good..its horrible, but I still have it as its a token I use to compare to my others to see how far I've developed.

Wow, very very nice knife. I suspect that you have experience with using tools and working with your hands, that knife looks too good... I mean all that with nothing but respect and congratulations on such a nice finished product. I have been doing research on knife making and hope to be able to make my first knife soon. Seeing your work puts some jump back into my motivation to get my act together and get out to the garage. I am very impressed with your work and even more amazed knowing what tools you used in the process. Other people have shown examples of knives that look much more "first attempt" and used much more variety of expensive knife making tools. It is very refreshing to see someone make such a nice custom piece with a very modest toolset. I am nothing but amazed...

I do agree with the other member that posted you should keep your first knife. This is the first knife, in hopefully a line of many, that you made yourself and I think you would end up regretting selling it down the road. It would be very cool to keep around so you can always reflect on your own progress and so you can always look back and show others on where you started. It reminds me of always seeing "the first dollar" that businesses made, where they keep it posted up in the office or behind the register or something, but the point is they keep that "first money made" around so they can reflect back on it at a later date. I vote you should keep your first work of art around for your enjoyment in the future.

Thanks again for the kind words all.

I just received my stencils from Ernie.
Along with the etcher I built a few weeks ago............... this is what happened!!!!

Ernie,

After you telling me about this thread yesterday I am really sad you did not bring this knife along with you ! I would have love to see it in person. I can say for your first attempt you did a GREAT job. I also really like the font that you and Ernie came up with for your mark! I like the old western theme.

Job well done and looking forward to more of your work.

Ken

Great job. My son is very interested in making his first knife, so this site and your great work has inspited me to help him try this as a father and son project. Can you let me know where you got all the parts to start the project and finish? Where do we get the steel? I see from the post we can send it out to get treated, who is best for this? Any suggestions, comments are welcome as I take this project on with my son. Brian

Great job Ernie, as has been said this WIP is a major motivational boost for beginning knifemakers such as myself. I have a quick question- could you direct me to where you found the plans and specifications on building your own etcher? I know there are several (read: LOTS OF ;) ) different methods across the internet for etching logos. I am very impressed with the way yours turned out and would love some insight on building one of my own.

Thanks again for this great WIP and good luck on the next one!

Griz, the plans I used for the etcher I got from Chris Crawfords website.

Smoking knife. I built a couple and not as nice as this. I can tell you what not to do though.:)

Very fine job! Great finish on the blade! When I get a makers mark, I sure hope it comes out as nice as yours did.

Great job Ernie! Congrats on the fine work with both knife and sheath. It wasn't that long ago that I finished my first ones and did most of the work with hand tools, so I can appreciate the effort that went into finishing this knife as well as you did and you clearly paid attention to the details.

Nice work!
