im a spyderco virgin (what a great way to start a post). I've had a few folders, nothing worth noting, so this will also be my first, and hopefully not last, quality knife.

My question is, I enjoy larger bladed folders. They just feel right to me. What could you guys recommend? I was looking at the Police and Military (leaning closer to the police because it looks so damn COOL :D), but are there any others around there?

Thanks in advance :)

The Military...

The Chinook II is a real hefty folder, a great knife too.

Even though this is the Spydie forum, I've got to suggest you take a look at the
Ontario Jerry Hossom Retribution. It is a BIG, quality folder.

The Manix and the Chinook are the real beefy Spydercos.

What I normally think of when I think of "big".

as far as big goes the manix, chinook, police and millie would be the ones to look at imho.

oh wow, thanks for the quick response :)

hmm.. that chinook is looking SEXY, but the manix is saying "pick me, pick me"...
AHH!

Maybe I'll get a Millie, now that we're talking about it.

I'm getting a little bored with my 710D2.
Great knife, but time for a change.

I'm sure you know how it is...

for just everyday small things (ie, cutting string, packaging, boxes), im sure these knives would be more than exceptional at any of those chores, but what about for self defence?

which of them would you favour (chinook, manix, millitary, police)?

also, is the police generally the same size as the chinook, manix, millitary just skinnier?

thanks :)

www.spyderco.com lists the specs for each knife in detail.

Personally, if I was picking a Spyderco knife for SD I'd go with a waved Endura or a Civilian. (Or a Swick.)

what you want to get is the carbon fiber bg42 military . i have one , but don`T use it due to this being australia and if i got caught carrying it it would be confiscated :( other reccomendations ; police , endura 4 , salt pacific

I was a Spyderco "virgin" just two weeks ago when I received my Caly 3 via UPS. My Kopa arrived yesterday. OMG those knives are waaaaay nicer than I expected. The Kopa is great but the Caly is simply outstanding. Ordered my Manix last week, now I'm just waiting for the mailman. I had trouble deciding between the Manix, Chinook and Military as well. I figured the Manix would be easier to sharpen than the Chinook and it has a stockier look than the Military.

Can't wait!

The Manix has everything most people ever need in a large folder. The blade shape is utilitarian for everyday carry and the locking mechanism is legendary for its' strength. Add S30V steel, great ergonomics, and G-10 scales and it's one of the best (or just the best) large production folder being made today.

Welcome Rustyshackle. If you like big, beefy, tough folders, the Manix fits the bill. It's the Abrams tank of the Spyderco lineup. I think the Chinook is pretty similar, I don't have one to compare it with but I think the only major difference is the blade shape. I have a Military and while it's large, it's pretty lightweight and has a very thin tip. I'm afraid to really beat on my military because the tip is like a very sharp needle. It's a great knife, but I wouldn't recommend it for really heavy use, though I know a lot of people do.
