i want a big folder :)

wow thanks for all the responses. i guess this will ultimately come down to personaly preference (in my case) since they are all so wonderful.

Now, i'm not sure what kind of edge i would want. ive read that with a serrated edge it is hard to sharpen, so i think i would have to stay away from it. So i guess i will have to go for a plain edge, but what about a combo edge?

what are the advantages for a combo edge? to be honest, i really dont know much about these things. if there's a link or guide for me to read up, that would be appreaciated.

Thanks :)

rustyshackle dude,

forget combo-edges and serrations, forget the police, manix and the chinook and get yourself a plain edge military :D

seriously though, that's the knife you need, you won't regret it

Civilian is cool too, pretty wicked looking if you ask me. Cold Steel makes a lot of big folders but they have a less then stellar reputation. The SOG Pentagon/Spec Elite series are pretty large as well. Extrema Ration makes som big folders but they're probably more expensive thanwhat you're looking for.

There are many advocates of the combo edge around here (I'm not one of them). In theory, the combo edge gives you the best of both worlds - a plain edge for fine work and a serrated edge for coarse/demolition work. The serrated edge does better at cutting fiberous materials (at least according to the advocates) and it packs more edge length into the blade length. It also stays usably sharp longer than a plain edge.

In my personal experience (for whatever that is worth  ) I find combo edges somewhat lacking in usability. The serrations always get in my way when I am trying to do anything but fine work with the tip. Admittedly, this is much more of a problem with a short blade than a long one. Also, I don't carry a knife for self defense, and supposedly that is where the combo edge really shines. The serrated portion is supposed to start the cut much more easily than a plain edge. I think I'll just stay out of knife fights rather than testing that one for myself.

With the correct tools, sharpening a serrated edge is not that difficult, but it can be more time consuming. I have been carrying a C44 Dyad, and find I use the serrated blade more than the plain blade, but a large part of that is I always have other plain blades to use. The serrated blade accounts for maybe 10% of my total knife use, and I seldom have to even touch it up. It just keeps cutting (but it also gets kept away from hard/abrasive things that would dull it quickly).

The Manix and Military both have enough blade to make the combo edge viable for those who like it. But my Manix, Mini-Manix, Military, Paramilitary and both of my Police models are all plain edge. :D

A buddy of mine just got a BG-42 carbon fiber Military from New Graham. Very nice, graceful, and very light weight for it's size. Won't weigh down your pocket.

I have a Manix and love it. All the comments about how sturdy and well-made the knife is are dead on. Have you ever locked up a well-made safe? Or closed the bolt on a fine bolt-action rifle? That's how my Manix feels. It's the best Spydie I have, out of the 15 or so I own.

I have about 40 folders. If I had to run out of the house and survive with one folder, I'd take the Manix. :)

Don't forget the Spyderfly. It's a stout 4 inch bladed knife with NO change of the lock ever failing. Only 70ish dollars too.

i really like the spiderfly, but it's illegal in Canada (I think :( )

but wow, this is becomming such a toughie for me..
i definately cant just get one now i think lol. they all seem so SEXY :).

ill give it a few, and ill figure out which one to get.

Of spydercos current lineup, the manix gets my vote. But let me seize this opportunity to renew my call for a mega-folder, say 4.75 to 5" blade. I also like big folders.

I was going to get the new CF BG42 Military until I saw that they wanted $139.00 for it. I think I'll hold out for awhile.

ATR Big, the lock is great.

though i LOVE the ATR (its my fav spydie hands down in the Ti version) i dont consider it a "big "knife the blade is "only" 3 7/16, to be "big" imho requires a 4" minimum, 4.5" being better.

military!!!

It's big, so flat and light that you don't know you have it with you, it feels great in the hand. What more do you want?
Get yourself the normal G 10 version, the Carbon Fiber damages more easily.
I paid 190 euro for my Military in Carbon Fiber, that's close to 230, 240 dollar! But, it's worth everything!

When it comes to the large Spyderco blades the 3 that are so good that I like them equally, in other words you can't go wrong with either model:
The Military
The Manix
The Police
OK now let me give some clearification. I don't recommend the stainless Police for self defense. If you are going to get a Police model then keep your eyes open for an older G-10 handled model. Most of them are flat grind blades and are just super knives.
The Military & Manix both come stock with G-10 handles. The Military has been made with 4 different blade steels that I am aware of. The 4 that I know of are ATS-34, 440V, S-30V and BG-42. There's not a bad one in the bunch. Even the ATS-34 was a great blade.
The Manix is the true "tough guy" of Spyderco's big blades. It literally speaks for itself.

If you really like BIG folders, try to find a Camillus CUDA MAXX 5.5" or, if you get really lucky, a Gibbs CUDA MAXX 7". Yes, they are from Camillus and Camillus is in bankruptcy, but these knives are so darned simple that there is little to go wrong (famous last words :) ) so I am not worrying about the two that I own and carry.

For Spyderco- Military. You have a Benchmade, what about the Skirmish??
Someone will probably trade you a Military for your 710D2. You never know.
