I want to start a movement among knifemakers

I am 47 soon 48, and just yesterday my doc did my annual prostate exam," had to assume the position" and my doc is a female, she is insistant that I have the test done and I thanked her for that, she wants me to see the surgeon for a repeat scope for blood in the stool. I thanked her because of alot of cancers are showing up in this area..my mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer at age 78..and her brother had throat cancer 40yrs ago..he was given 7 yrs to live, this year he turned 75 and never slowed him down abit..so there is life after cancer. i just want to look ahead and miss some of the obstacles they have had to hurdle. just a co-incidence..i sold my surgeon a gerber pocketknife ..from the big box store I work at..in the sporting goods dept. Maybe I can get a discount rate if he uses that new knife on me??..just kidding

glad to hear you recovered, i hope by the time i need to start getting checked they can use even less intrusive checks and if, God forbid, i need to get soem fixin', they will be able to do it with out some of the bad side effects some people have had.

hmm risk of ED, guess i better load up on the vitimins and minerals they say promote good prostate health... and just live it up while i can :D

take care

i will try and quit smoking. i just dont have the money for any of the medicines or patches or gums to help me quit. i have tried cold turkey and begtan to have panic attacks and shortness of breath and headaches. i was dating someone at the time and i was given medicine from the local clinic (wellbutrin XL) and it seemed to help. but then she broke up with me and i ended up smoking again. its a bad habit for me i know. its one thing that keeps me from getting bored and eating so much. once i finish my forge and stuff ill be working on knives full time and maybe that will keep me busy. but if i start getting any of the old symptoms again im just going to have to wait until i can afford the help aids. since i live alone i dont really have any support at my house and i live too far from most of my friends who would support me. i just need to try and stay active from the time i wake up til the time i sleep and that should help me kick it. i dont want to die like my great grandpa did (lung cancer).

well even though its not quiting its not as bad for you, try either dip or chew, you get your nicotine intake and knock out the bad effects on your lungs (not the best solution but you dont end up spending any more money really)

The patch and gum are priced to be affordable to people with a pack-a-day habit.

I quit with the gum two years ago after a 40 year 2-pack-day habit. It took a few stops and starts to get to that point, but I never faltered this last time. It was all about determination.

You have to want to quit. Nothing more, nothing less. None of the pills, gum or other aids make you quit. They just help with the withdrawl.

i might try switching to the dip. it wouldnt be unnatural to see a guy in a cowboy hat dipping snuff here in texas anyways. the only bad part is that i have a full gotee and mustache. i would hate to have it stained in tabacco. only bad thing about dipping is that second hand chew is worse than second hand smoke. think about that as you lay down tonight about to sleep.

lol ya, if you spit in a bottle it will probably keep a lot of second had dip away

use long cut and youll have less second hand pieces ;) . my friend has a beard and mustasch and he keeps pretty clean. the beard and mustach doesnt matter munch once you get used to spitting ... hmm this is kind of a weird discussion now isnt it.

good luck with your quiting, just make sure if/when you use one of the gums/patches you use the correct dossage, my bro is law tried to quit dipping a hile back and ended up chewing just as much as he did before plus smoking

i just have to remember now to swallow when i start dipping. ill start after i finish the new carton. might as well smoke them while i have them.

Thanks for the well wishes from everyone. :D

My PSA level was 9 before the surgery and the latest test on 2/22 the level had gone down to .4. The doctor said that early detection was the key to recovery. Get checked!!!

As far as the ED I had no problem with that. The cancer on one side was small enough and localized in the center so the nerve along one side was spared. The nerve on the other side was replaced with a graft from my leg. I really don’t know if the graft took because there was no dysfunction to begin with.

As fitzo said the change in PSA level is an important factor even if it is low. Also the finger check does not always indicate cancer. My “digital check” showed no indication so both tests should be done.

Thanks foxmd good information.

I get quite a chuckle out of people who say they can't afford to quit. They never have problems affording the cigarettes? They will definitely have problems affording the health costs.
The gum and patches won't help you stop until you see that you are killing yourself. Planning to quit later on is useless, later on never seems to be convenient. Just quit - buy the gum instead of the smokes, tough it out ,and go to your grand kids birthday parties.
I have sat at the bedside of two friends with their body rotting away due to lung cancer. It ain't fast, and it ain't pretty. Do yourself a favor and quit!
Stacy

PS - You will be a whole lot more likely to meet and keep girls by not smoking!

BTW - I get my PSA checked (Including what my doctor calls "The Royal Treatment" ) every year.

OlJoe,
Glad to hear you are doing well, and thanks for posting this. My grandfather died of PC. He was everything in the world to me. By the time he found out he had cancer there were 178 tumors. I got just three days with him after that. If everyone here needs a reason to get checked, there is probably someone out there who feels the same way about you as I did about my grandfather. Do it for them if nothing else.
Pimpin squee,
You have way too many excuses, and all of them are poor.

Been there, done that as far as Prostate Cancer and Great treatment.

"If this post causes one person, their father, grandfather, son, brother or friend to get checked I feel it is worthwhile. I do, however, hope that every man, even if you don’t have symptoms (I didn’t), will get this simple blood test."

I'll second that!!!!

Oljoe, glad your surgery turned out OK for you. Watch your PSA like a hawk.

I was very lucky and found out about a non envasive treatment Called Proton Beam Therapy, done in Loma Linda, Ca. Most Doctors won't even mention it as they are Specialist in Surgery, Radiation and can't do it. If you're told that Surgery is " The Gold Standard" please do your homework.
Most men don't have any treatment symtoms at all with The Proton Beam and many play 18 holes of golf everday while in treatment. I know it sounds too good to be true, but it is.

I'm a big proponent of Proton Beam Therapy and I'll tell everyone that will listen about it . Like Oljoe, I don't want any guy to have to go through some of the nasty side effects that can occur with other Cancer therapy just because they have not been fully informed.

This is way off topic, but too important not to inform others.

A lot more info at www.protonbob.com

Do yourself a favor and check it out even if your PSA looks OK now. A low PSA does not always mean NO CAncer.

PM me if you need more info. Rant Ended.

bladsmth, mdoyle, and so many others (not PimpinSquee) are so right. A PSA is a very simple, easy bloodtest done once a year along with your regular annual checkup. When you hit 45, just start gettin it done. It can save your life. Oljoe, glad to hear your doing well. And bllwdcrvr and oldwolf best of luck. You can no longer rely on your doctor to keep you safe. You must take responsibility for your own health care. And don't worry so much about the side effects of surgical or other treatment. They're still not as bad as the alternatives.

i appreciate the concerns here. with yalls help and encouragement im sure i can kick the habit. the reason why i cant afford the help aids is because i just dropped a load of money for my forge and a few other things. once i finish this new carton which should be in about 2 weeks i will switch to dip long cut and one i get rid of the habit from the cigs i will stop chewing and purchase some of the help aids. as it is right now im fighting allergies and just from coughing from the dry throat from the allergies i realize i dont want to be coughing like this the rest of my life nor be hooked up to oxygen all the time. i want to try and outlive my grandpa (died at age of 81) and still be able to make beautiful knives that anyone would be proud to own.

I have set my day for tomorrow, to finally quit smoking.
I've been working myself up for this whole month, telling myself the 28th is the last day I will ever smoke these rotten bastids again.
If I have to I'll be calling in sick and locking myself in a closet, today is my last day!
I'm only 24 and have been smoking a pack a day+ for 8 yrs now... I started smoking the odd one when I was friggin 12! by 13 it was a regular habit.
wish me luck, I know I'll need it.
Steve

I had my last one in 1989 after smoking on and off for over 10 years. I was babtised at church that day. I think it was a gift from God because I didnt have any urge to smoke again. I do however go through about a box a week of toothpicks but look how clean my teeth are. :)

well even though its not quiting its not as bad for you, try either dip or chew, you get your nicotine intake and knock out the bad effects on your lungs (not the best solution but you dont end up spending any more money really)

This is not a good solution to quiting smoking.

Dipping will increase your risk of cancer by almost ten times vs. smoking. Many people have developed cancerous tumors in their mouth after just a few years of dipping.

i guess when i get the money for the help aids ill just get them and a few boxes of toothpicks. if only i had the skills to whitle i would whittle me some toothpicks shaped like knives or swords.

Dangit, you guys have almost got me talked into quitting smoking.

It's wierd, I know people who beat pretty heavy cocaine habits, and even they say quitting smoking is harder... yet I know folks who smoked for 30+years and just plain quit one day...
