I want to start a movement among knifemakers

Hi Mike. That's an amazing story. Their diddling and errors are very serious. Once the cancer has spread outside of the prostate gland (into bones or lymphnodes for example) there is no longer a cure available. The best the doctor's will be able to offer your friend is treatment to try to keep you alive as long as possible. Hard decisions have to be made when balancing quantity of life over quality of life issues. I hope it work's out for your friend. Best regards. Dave

Yes, I have another friend that is going through that right now. Started out as prostate cancer, had surgery a few years ago and now it has spread. He is in constant pain from his testicles and now, further down his legs. All they can do for now is to try to make him as comfortable as possible. He sleeps most of the time. He has gotten all of his business in order and is just waiting...

Craig

Very sorry for your friend Craig. That's the worst possible ending from this illness. A good hospice doctor could maybe alleviate some of your friend's pain though. One area I think Canada is a little more enlightnened than the AMA is in using medicine for real pain relief. Oxycontin does have a genuine purpose and there should be no stigma or criminality for it's proper use. Getting kind of O.T. My one year and three year old neice's are coming over this afternoon. When I'm with them I wish I could live forever.

sorry to hear about their hard times and their late detection. we should all learn from those stories. i know i will. im still young tho. i hope that in 20 years when im in my early 40's that the advancements in medicine and such will be so great that they will have a cure for any cancer out there. im also a proud supporter for breast cancer awareness. i know a lady who had breast cancer and had one of her breasts removed. she lost alot of dignity in herself and never really gained it back until she had plastic surgery to have a new breast made. breast cancer awareness is something that men also need to worry about, many men dont realize it but we too are succeptable to getting breast cancer. the majority of the knife makers here are married and i know they wouldnt want their wife to get breast cancer.

I am not aware of any criminal implications for the 'proper' use of Oxycontin.

In my experience some docs prescribe it too eagerly. My mom, for instance had some chronic pain and they were going to put her on it for some period of time. They prescribed it, but before taking it, she did her research and asked whether or not she'd be addicted. "Oh yes," they said. "Well what do I do then?" she asked. "Rehab," they said.... no joke!

She just dealt with the pain, thank you.

But I agree, if you're dying of cancer, let 'er rip. The docs I've been around aren't shy about prescribing pain meds.

My father-in-law died of prostate cancer just a couple years ago. They caught it early and he underwent treatment, including surgery. It seemed to be handled, then it sprang back up and it was all over. It was strange with him, though. He didn't have a lot of pain, and the docs said that happens sometimes.
He fell down during that time and broke his arm between the elbow and shoulder---it seemed a little sore. We took him in and they missed it because he simply didn't seem to be in the pain such a complete break should give. I discovered the break days later when trying to help him out of a chair. I could feel the fact that it was a total break--the two halves moving independently.
Because he wasn't in much pain from anything, the only pain meds he got was a dose of morphine about an hour before he died--he wasn't conscious, but the nurse perceived he might be in pain and gave it to him.

Cancer is ugly, though, even if you are lucky with the pain thing.

Fitzo, sorry to hear about your friend. Unfortunately sometimes people, even doctors, just go through the motions instead of doing their job. Things like this are part of the problem with men going to see a doctor. Women will ask all of the right questions, mostly because they like to talk, men on the other hand are listeners and problem solvers. We hear “Everything is within the normal limit” and that’s good enough. One less problem to worry about.

There have been 1017 views of this thread. I hope many of you will get a checkup and follow through on what the doctor tells you.

Good health to all of you,
Joe

Dam Jacob,

I'm surprised IG hasn't hit you on this one post yet, :jerkit: afterall being a pain in the a$$ (hemorrhoids) is his specialty. :D

Wow this thing got a little weird but the point is still valid. I hope that everyone gets checked.
