I was embarrassed to use my knife

I am a handy person, so a knife isn't a big deal as I explain it's a tool, not a weapon... I try to EDC knives that aren't very weapon looking. (A brown FFG Spyderco Delica to my looks like one of the friendliest knives behind a SAK)

Secondly, I don't care what other people think, but I am aware of my surroundings and won't try to bring attention to my knives because of people like this. Guys usually think my knives are cool as I show them it can cut off hair on an arm with east, and some/most girls (keep in mind im in my 20's) not so much. They see it as a weapon, but I am a faily gentle and easy going guy so as I can explain it's a tool they will calm down. If they are still against it, I'll say "why do I need a knife? Why do you need 10 pairs of shoes?"

I will tell you a couple short stories I had, both with my bosses, and ironic as it is one was this week. About ten years ago I was working with a boss filling a one ton hopper full of fertilizer with 50 pound bags (yeah our supplier was out of bulk) So he asks if anyone had a knife. Well I am already using one so I pull out my extra and I got in the almost same tone you did, "why do you carry two knives?" I told him I bring one for me and another one for people who are unprepared. He didn't like it, but who cares. This week, same thing new boss actually really nice guy and awesome dude. He was fertilizing by himself, and he knew I carried a knife. "(He does every once in a while) anyway I reached into my back pocket and pulled a HEST 2.0 DPx out, felt the blade and decided to loan him the rukus, when he saw me pull the second knife he said, "you carry two knives?" I said yeah, one for me and one incase someone needs to borrow one. I stand up when people act stupid towards me because I carry a tool That they demonize until they need one, and then still don't understand while they are using it why you need one. Rant off.
I just wanted to share a quick dialogue that took place last weekend. Just for fun. :)

Normally, I do not care too much about what others think, and I am confident in what I do and who I am, but last weekend I had a "moment of weakness".

Please take note.
None of my friends are "knife people". The only ones who carry some kind of knife are a couple guys who carry those keychain knock-off swiss army knives.

So, my friends and I were decorating our friend's house for a party/gathering. A couple off us were busy in one room.
A friend (let's call him Billy) asked me if I had a knife so that he could cut some tape.
Automatically, my hand went to my pocket (to get my knife so that I could had it to him) when another friend (let's call her Emily) across the room spoke up.

(That day was the first time I had seen Emily in years. I have changed quite a bit since then. Naming one change, I never carried a knife back when we were seeing each other more frequently.)

Well, Emily had overheared what Billy had said about a knife. That had bewildered her as she is the quintessential city, party girl.
She asked, "What?! Why would you have a knife?" in a tone that said having a knife was the most riduluous thing and only "dangerous" people, convicts, or crazy people had/carried knives.

Slowly (and in the most casual manner), I dropped my hand/arm away from my pocket and said, "Oh, I don't have one," even though I had used it to cut some plastic some 15 minutes ago in the kitchen...

That was such a random "moment of weakness." I like to be truthful and I am usually never afraid of judgement from others, but hey~ there are always times when we diverge from normalcy.

Whew. So many words for just two sentences spoken... :o

This probably never happened to you guys, right?
I'm guessing you are all tough guys who never ever care about other peoples' thoughts :D
I had a chance to help educated others about knives, but I just let it be :(

Well, I hope you all had a nice weekend. :)

I tend to hang around like minded people unless I am at work. (No knives or guns allowed.) Life is tooooo short to explain things to people like that and why should I? I'm the one holding the knife and my trusty g17. LOL. Seriously, Knives, guns, hammers, (insert tool here), are just that, tools. Some are way more personalized than others but it all comes down to cutting stuff, doesnt it? BTW I hate Emily, she's getting fat. Just kidding.

Can't say that I agree with you when it comes to firearms. Besides poking holes through walls, I can't see them having any utility besides as a weapon or for sport.

I can relate to OP. My mom's (reluctantly) willing to tolerate having my rifle around at home, provided that that be the only firearm that I have while I'm living under her roof, but she (and my step dad) aren't as tolerant with my knives. When I was younger, she'd hide my knives, including utility knives, when she found them in my room. She thinks all my knives look 'scary', even though a lot of them don't look much different from kitchen knives, and whenever I pull out a knife to open a package or what not, she screams at me and goes 'Why are you still carrying those things around?', even when we're at home. I really wish she'd trust me more. After a recent incident where a staff member at my school caught wind of me having a knife, when one of my friends blabbed about it, and I had it confiscated(no suspensions or anything serious, though; it's a college, and they do try their damndest to avoid as much negative press as possible;also, it wasn't that great of a knife so no worries there), my mom convinced me not to carry any knives with me. Three weeks later, I bought a new folder and started carrying again. It was a very long three weeks, and I ran into a lot of inconvenient situations that called for a blade. I just can't not carry a knife just because the people around me absolutely freak the fuck out over them. I don't blame them, though. Los Angeles has a lot of gangster wannabes and just irresponsible people in general.

As for me justifying having a knife to others... Sometimes, I tell people the truth and say that I live in a rough neighborhood. Honestly, it's not that rough. We've even had hipsters setting up bike shops and art galleries nearby over the past couple of years, but I was also punched in the gut by a stranger while I was minding my own business when I was like 10 years old and my friend, who lives a few blocks away from me, gets mugged frequently enough that his parents don't allow him to carry over $20 or even a cell phone on him. Others, I just tell them that folding knives are terrible weapons(most of which are) and, if time provides, lecture them on why folding knives aren't very good weapons and then ramble on about knives in general. I admit that I don't know too much about knives, but I found that I do know enough to go on for a good hour or so, by which time they'll either be terribly bored or terribly interested.

It's funny, everyone I know can always "rely" on me having a knife for whatever the siutation. Thery're never surprised that I have a knife, but would be shocked if I didn't have one on me.

I always tell everyone whenever I take mine out to use it "everyone should always carry a pocket knife." Even if the one I'm using at the tmie is a fixed tanto blade. :D

The best answer I know is one I stole from this forum..

"Why do you carry a knife?"

"In case you need one."

Would have worked well here.

Type of knife matters in one way for sure. You have the right to carry any legal knife but, a nice little slipjoint gives you more freedom in situations like this. You can even turn it around and make the anal-retentive individual a bit embarassed.

That doesn't mean she is smart, all that means is she is educated and went to College.

Some of the dumbest most ignorant people I have ever known have been to College, some of them dumber than a fence post and that includes College Professors.

Also remember most of what is running our Country are Highly Educated Lawyer types so that that for what you will.

That is such a true statement. I always get such a kick out of people who bring up a college education as proof of someone's intelligence. My sister in law has a Master's in accounting/finance. Her life/family is a complete and utter mess because she is dumb as a fence post and doesn't have a lick of common sense.

Edited to add that this doesn't mean I think anyone with an education is dumb either. All I'm saying is that a person's education isn't necessarily an indication of their intelligence.

People are born intelligent or not, it's just the way their brains work.

Education and intelligence are two different things.

People who bring College up as proof of Intelligence have been to College so in their eyes anyone who hasn't been can't possibly be as intelligent as they are....

Yeah I have been to College....... And that really doesn't prove much as it really wasn't that big of a deal, kind of boring really, at least to me anyway.

In the end these days the value of a College Education has been cheapened so much that it's almost not worth going as most of the Jobs around for awhile now that require a College Degree can be done by High School Freshman's with the training most receive once they take those positions. The pay rate is also in that range, 4 years of College to make under $30K a year to start if they can find a job at all.

That's not talking about those CPA, PHD, Lawyers etc, that's the basic degrees.

I had a position once that I had been doing for 3 years with that Company (10 years experience) and trained others to do that job as well, but some VP stated that now a 4 year degree was required to do that job so I was let go (I only had 2 years).

I was tempted to poke fun of the OP but I understand being caught off guard it's better to stay under the radar.
Now for next time be prepared there is no reason anyone should feel they need to hide one. Aside from self defense there are many daily chores I use mine for in the pool maintenance business that are totally benign. Cutting open bags of salt and sand, boxes of parts cutting out liners stripping wire etc.
You said it was a female that said something, if you are sweet on her you minds well move on you'll never be happy with someone like that unless your cool with being a emasculated puss. I'm betting your not.

What we have all learned here today is that Men need to go back to being Men. I'm not suggesting we club our women and haul them to the cave, but in the face of absurdity like this act like a Man. Personally we don't see much of this nonsense in the South. Honestly a guy with out the knife would be getting made fun of; likely by another guys wife.

The only dignified answer to a question like this would be ``but, but, if they take all our guns how will we kill all the Liberals?`` hehehe

Actually, I have been carrying a pocket knife since as long as I can remember, at least since junior high school. I guess I was lucky to go to the pubic schools before they invented metal detectors.

That's pretty rude. I'd be pretty pissed if that happened to me. At least she was a friend right? How did she react to it?
So did you get the date with Emily or not?
OP post needs to be edited ASAP to prevent any more of these kinds of posts.

What kind of "Posts" would that be?

Posts from folks who didn't read the whole thread and assume the OP is male. There's been several people who've done this. That's why he mentioned it.

I didn't assume anything. All kinds of people date all kinds of people.
