I was embarrassed to use my knife

I have a similar story.....

I stopped at a western boot store in North Carolina last summer. I bought my wife a pair of boots and she wanted to wear them home. I needed to cut some tags off but didn't want to pull my knife out in the middle of the store. The young lady behind the counter saw me struggling and jokingly said to me " if you were a southern boy you'd have a knife" , she handed me her pocket knife.

The moral of the story , don 't be embarrassed.

:o Ouch!!

And to the OP, one of the easiest things to say in this situation is..... why wouldnt I carry a knife? or....why arent you carrying one?

or you could just say ...... its kinda hard to kill puppies with a spoon! ;)

There have been plenty of times when I have not taken my knife out of my pocket even though I needed it or someone else would have benefited from it. And yes, it was because of what others might think. My situation is totally different from yours, though. I live in Norway where carrying a knife in public has been illegal since 2001. This has led to most people believing that knives are dangerous things they should stay clear of. So in order not to scare anyone I sometimes just keep my knife in my pocket.

I wouldn’t say that it has anything to do with weakness, though. It is simply to not to frighten anyone for no reason.

If I’m just hanging out with friends like you did however, I wouldn’t have had any problem with pulling it out of my pocket. Friends understand each other.

It's your call whether to let someone borrow your personal items or not, but seems fairly meek to deny possession of such a small gents knife. Women are attracted to self-confidence, not self-consciousness.

Take some of the above advice, construct a couple comebacks, wait for the inevitable opportunity and whip that knife out! Don't forget to chastise your non-knife carrying buddy either for inconveniencing you.

Sunog, my apologies for calling you "he."

No apologies necessary :)
This forum is geared more towards men/males, so the misunderstanding is natural.

I really like your story. It made me smile :)

And she bought me this:

Wow! :D
the room would have been filled with hysterics if I had brought out one of those :D

Do I think she (and others like her) are sheeple that are totally blinded to reality? Of course I do

But many of those people, if not most, are receptive to clear logical arguments, and some can even be converted to our side of thinking.

Just as long as you don't have a know-it-all attitude they can be made to see the light! :D
I was one of those converted! :)

I think the OP should be applauded for an honest straight-up post.

Like a few other posters have said, I almost always carry a sheeple friendly knife as well as my real EDC. Just simpler that way sometimes, (and at other times a smaller knife is the better tool for the job at hand).
I think this falls under the "discretion" heading. While I almost always have a PM2 or a PPT with me, it is there for my use, not there to make a pointed statement (no pun).

Sunog, maybe you should consider sending "Emily" a ladybug or a small SAK for her next birthday - she might be pleasantly surprised at how useful it is; and she could stop using her teeth on those pesky price tags!

I usually just respond with "Real men carry knives" or "Because you never know when you'll need one." Only happened once or twice. Just about every guy down here has at least a pocketknife on them. Only people that ever acted funny about it are usually............

Fixed it for you Sir.;)

(( do not edit quotes outside of Whine & Cheese ))

Edit part..
Understood. Won't happen again. Thanks for the heads up, Sir.

There's no shame in what you did. I would've used my knife anyway, but hey, we're all different and I'm sure you made a judgment call that felt right at the time, regardless of your reasons. No need to be embarrassed. It's not like you avoided using it in a life-or-death situation or anything.

I will say this though: time to grab a nice mini multitool, like a Leatherman Micra, S4, or Style PS (this one doesn't even include a knife!) so you've got a quick-at-hand pair of scissors. I use mine when scissors are a better tool, and always carry it for when my EDC knife might be illegal (schools, federal buildings, etc).

Good post all around.:)

Plus, you reminded me I need to buy a multitool.:D

There are a few general personality traits that are true in most. One of those being ego. Usually the first time someone confronts you about carrying a knife is not a good time for a lesson. Their ego and fears wont allow them to see things your way. So when a person has asked me about carrying a knife for the first time I usually just flip the question back on them and I don't justify there question with an answer. It usually goes something like this:

"You carry a knife?"
"yup"
"Whats it for?"
"you don't know what a knife is for? haha"

And I just leave it at that and don't actually ever answer the question. Usually it is almost always the same sort of girl you described who asks about it and a little humiliation for asking a dumb question goes a long way. Answering the question just gives them more ammo to be cynical. Best to let them figure it out what a knife is used for themselves. At least that's been my experience in dealing with that question.

Start carrying a folding fork.
"Why do you carry a knife?"
"Because it goes with my fork."

Problem solved.:)

(Boker actually sells a fixed blade, stag handled knife and fork set with sheath)

And she bought me this:

YES!! SMATCHET!!

Sunog- Don't be embarrassed to be who you are. If you want to carry a knife, then carry one (even if it is a sanrenmu). :D

Seriously, though, just cut what needs to be cut and go on about your business. I've found if I don't treat it like a big deal, then even the non-knife people don't either.

Exactly, I have a little Stockman-pattern knife which serves that role admirable.

As for "Emily", she is actually pretty smart. (She graduated from UCLA and is currently studying to become a lawyer).
It's just that we grew up learning that knives were weapons.

That doesn't mean she is smart, all that means is she is educated and went to College.

Some of the dumbest most ignorant people I have ever known have been to College, some of them dumber than a fence post and that includes College Professors.

Also remember most of what is running our Country are Highly Educated Lawyer types so that that for what you will.

Norway?! No knives in public?

Could you clarify that? Does that mean "not exposed in public" or is it "being in public and having a knife at all" that we're talking about?

And is this true only in cities, or does it apply up north in caribou country?

Sunog, I just caught that you're female. This being the case I'm sure you will have to deal with this question from other females quite often. Its too bad that you girls are always in competition because she will most likely use this information against you. I still think being aloof is the best way to go. If she is a girl that looks up to you the next time you see her she'll probable be carrying her own knife.

Very true, but not all people who dislike knives are stupid. I know some very intelligent people that disapprove... :p I guess they just have "stupid moments"...

There are varying degrees of intelligence as we all know. :)

What most lack is Common since and basic reasoning and people are born with that, it's just can't be learned from a book or taught.

It's not about knives at all.

If she was really intelligent she would have understood why YOU have a knife without even thinking about it in the 1st place and that really doesn't matter if she likes knives or not.

Understand where I am coming from here?

Any knife without "reasonable cause" which includes work, outdoors purposes or any other respectable purpose. And police have random stop and search powers. However in the rural areas farmers are fine wearing fixed blades etc.

Funny thing is that the number of knife kills a year has actually drastically increased since that law came into play. Back then the numbers were the lowest they had ever been.
