In this case, the seller made no explicit commitment to sell to the first "I'll take it" posted in the thread.
In any case, a seller is under no ethical obligation to sell to someone with whom he does not want to deal,
for any reason that seems good to him.

There are a lot of times when an item sells by p.m or e-mail. You have no way of knowing if anyone committed to buy it using a p.m or e-mail, or even what time someone may have committed to buy it. Maybe the seller just hadn't gotten around to marking it sold.

Its not the end of the world. I don't know how old you are, nor do I care. But your post about this comes across very juvenile. This is a small community and making comments like the one you made, are not going to make you any friends for future dealings

The bottom line is that the seller has the only say and the final say as to who he sells it to. Just because you appear to be the firts "I'll take it" in a thread does not mean you are the first to contact the seller OR the seller's first choice once he sees who wants to buy the knife.
Personally, I will always sell to someone with a solid rep and/or someone I have dealt with before long before I will simply go with the first.

Thats life my friend and has nothing to do with ethics.............................
