I would like a big hefty chopper

I really like the ESEE Junglas, and Scrapyard offerings, also take a look at the Survive GS0-10 being offered on this forum for $160, its a 10in blade of CPM-3V, (really outstanding price for the size and steel offered) You'll just have to wait a little longer than buying the other two since they haven't been made yet.

Ontario make a sp-8 survival machete. its realy not a machete its a pound and a half of chopping, shaving and hard use steel. less than 60 bucks. i love mine, and i cant give it up. I boutthe bk7 to replace it, but i just like the heavyer sp-8.

A few more dollars and you can have a very nice custom JK Gamblers Bowie (8" o1 steel blade, 13" overall) including a custom made Wasteland Leatherworks Apocalyptic sheath!

The list is REALLY endless. There are SO MANY good choppers for under $100, you should buy 2. Condor is another good brand. :D

You can get a monster chopper on Himalayan Imports part of the forum and I do mean monster for under 200,you'll never be able to break a 1/2 inch thick piece of differentially hardened 5160 (unless you want to pry tank tracks out),I have one and for something to take its spot on my go to SHTF or get me through something blade the contender will have to be made out of something from outer space with self sharpening capabilities. If you dont want to have a true monster chopper I along with others will suggest BK-9/Junglas,I have a 9 and its dear to my heart, solid and always dependable,Junglas has an awesome warranty and is a very tough blade.

tops power eagle 12, tops armageddon, esee junglas all are under two hundred or less and in order of chopping abilitly, wieght, and balance, the power eagle being the best chopper. or the the discounted scrapeyard mentioned above. they are all big tough blades any tree would have nightmares about

It also depends on how much weight and length you want to deal with.
A 2lb Ang Khola Kukri with a 5/8" thick 12" blade is going to outchop a 7" long .25" thick knife.... but do you want to carry such a beast?

Lots of great recommendations here and $200 gives you plenty of options. You can spend less and get some great cutlery!

If its used only to hack things up and don't want to take too much care down the road then go with a less than $30 machete.
HI kukri are a great bang for the buck, handles great and looks beautiful but iirc it rusts easy.
CS kukri has left a sour taste in my mouth once.

Still waiting for my BK9 to arrive:(.

Here's another vote for the Becker BK9. Not only is it a great chopper, it's versatile as well and the price is right. I use mine all the time.

Another option is a smaller axe. Something with a 20" OAL should do it for ya, and would chop better than most knives out there. Wetterlings and Gransfors Bruks have some offerings in that size rage (and much more)...

Id get an A2 Golok from Bark River. I have one and absolutely love it. A bit more than $200, but not much... and it is soooo worth it..

Here is a pic of mine with my 3V Aurora:

Cheers!

That is a classy set up.. uh if anyone needs me I'll be in my bunk..

Get an ESEE Junglas. It's a great heavy duty blade and the 1095 steel makes it pretty easy to sharpen out chips. Plus it comes with a really great sheath and an amazing no questions asked warranty. It's a real good user knife.

As has been mentioned before, weight can be a consideration if you are planning on extended hikes in the wild. I have been testing out the magnum kuk by CS this last month and it works well and does not break the bank. Also, I second the motion on checking out the Browning camp knife...very sharp cutter although a bit on the light side for extended chopping, yet this knife would be ideal for packing any distance you can go!
