I would really like a compression lock Military and Civilian, would anyone else?

Admittedly, I'm in love with the compression lock, as much as I like the backlock on my Endura and Matriarch 2, as much as you can still easily open these with one hand, the compression lock is just amazing. I originally thought the Military was a comp lock after finding it sold out and buying my first Spyderco back in December, an S45VN PM2 (Got eight more Spydies since, wow is this a habit... Thank God I'm not a watch guy) and the same thing happened when I bought a Matriarch 2, I thought the Civilian was a comp lock and found different. In regard to the Millie, while I've admittedly never handled a Walkerlock Spyderco, and I don't doubt their quality...I just love the comp lock.

I will still end up picking up whatever the new Military is, though. Would folks still rec it to somebody who loves the PM2 and has a couple? Is the tip durable enough? I've heard a lot, "You will understand once you get it", which is a concept I get. I enjoy large EDCs, so the Military seems like it would be nice. The PM2 is great but I like a lot of cutting area, and the PM2 is equal to an Opinel 8 in cutting area. Still, would love to see that and the Civvie comp-locked.

Buy a shaman. It has comp lock and a strong tip. If a person wants both the lock and the blade tip to be changed, I wonder what he likes the Military about.

I like the size and shape. Gonna get Native or Sage for a stronger tip :)

There is a comp lock Military prototype somewhere in testing. Personally, the compression lock does nothing positive for me, and several things negative, so I'm in the "leave it alone" group.

Oh, really? Where did you hear that? That's cool. And, just out of curiosity, what does the lock do that you do not like, especially when compared to backlock or liner lock, or whatever your favorite lock type is?
I don't like compression lock !
Period
Haha, I've seen your posts around, I like 'em, you say it straight up. To me, it feels very secure, and unlike a back-lock, the blade won't ever bash into the backspacer. I always close my Endura and Matriarch, backlocks, slowly and carefully for this reason. May I ask why you personally dislike the lock and what Spyderco locks you do like?

I prefer the compression lock over liner locks, and am waiting for Spyderco to release a Military with a compression lock. Liner locks are more susceptible to failing to hold the blade open when torqued in different directions. While that's not important to many here, it's important to me. That said, many report that the Military has a very, very good liner lock.

There is a thread on the Spyderco forums where Sal says a comp locked Military is in testing stages.

Sal has mentioned it several times. I believe the last time he did so, Eric had it.

As for why I don't like the comp lock, I've had them pinch my hand when I opened them (the first thing that happens is the lockbar moving outward against the scale to clear the detent). Then when it locks, the release tab snaps over and whacks my skin again, which stings. Then the lock release well chews on the same spot while I'm cutting. After that torment, I have to use both hands to close the knife or risk dropping it while going through the gyrations of the index finger pinch release.

You've been worrying for no reason. There are very few Spyderco backlocks that can hit the backspacer. Try squeezing the blade of your closed Endura into the handle. It won't move. The kick on the blade hits the lockbar on the release end of the lockbar pivot pin, so any force applied is transferred straight back to the blade. On something like a Buck 110, the kick hits the lockbar on the locking side of the lockbar pivot pin. Force applied there simply lifts the lockbar, allowing the blade to overtravel.

I do applaud you for closing them slowly and carefully as a part of safe knife handling practices, though. People seem to think knives are toys these days.

A compression lock Military would be in interesting novelty, but it wouldn't motivate me to buy one. The knife is already an overachiever and its execution of the humble liner lock is more than sufficient.

Don’t need additional fidget factor in the Military. It’s great as is. In fact, if done as in the PM2, I’d hate the Miltary to have a similar hotspot in hard use. Now a couple of new CQI’ed versions, in Z-wear, Magnacut, 3V, maybe a re-edition of the fluted Ti knife, etc., would be great.

And the Civilian ? It’s built for single use. Why does the lock matter ?

I got only Para 2
I don't like when lock is unlocked and blade closing freely on my index finger !!
Actually hate it
So Para2 is first and positively the last

I like the compression lock.
I did experience the lock biting my finger sometimes which I didn't like.

All back locks and compression locks can fall on my index finger and then close. I kinda like that. Military has the same action.

I'm not really excited about it coming out in compression lock. Mainly because I have several lock types available as it is.

It may or maynot be a bad idea to change a well made knife. We'll see I guess.

I think someone (might be eBay I’m not sure?) made a button release compression lock for the PM2? Might be an interesting concept for Spyderco to look into, for the military, pm2, and para 3.

My big hit on a comp lock Millie wad the weight bump. Being as light as it is for the size is one of the biggest draws of the model.

However, now that a version of the PM2 has come out with the partial liners (aluminum version), I'm hopeful the comp lock version of the Military will go that way to keep the weight down.
